City crews begin prime coat on south side streets

City and Gregg County crews applied a prime coat to Mills Pine Cooper Sabine and Quillow Streets as part of an earlier program funded by a 125000 HUD Community Block Grant with 50000 in local funds for materials. A similar project is planned for Red Rock. Most work should finish by early October if weather allows.

Zeke Prater Dies After Brief Illness At 71

Zeke Prater 71 of 305 Phillips Drive died Thursday morning in a local hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 30 p.m. at Quitman and Center Street Church of Christ with the Rev. Tim Yoriana and Murphy Phillips officiating. Burial followed at Glaster Memorial Park. Surviving are his widow Zell a son Bobby of Denton four brothers J L and John Crawford and Dewey a sister Roberta Brown and several nieces and nephews. He was a native of Keifer Oklahoma and resident of Gladewater since 1931. He worked for Spencer Harris Machine and Tool and was a Church of Christ member.

Anderson rites Friday

Kenneth G. Anderson 43 of 1010 Richey Drive died Wednesday night after a short illness in a local hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Crosby officiating. Burial followed at Creekmore Cemetery Naples. Survivors include his widow Melba three daughters and three grandchildren. He was a native of Naples and had lived in Gladewater 20 years and worked for Darr Equipment Company since 1959 retiring due to health. He was a Baptist.

Bears Triumph Over Gilmer Buckeyes In 14-AA Clash

Gladewater Bears defeated the Gilmer Buckeyes 34 0 in a District 14-AA showdown. Quarterback Larry Lockett passed 8 of 11 for 159 yards while receivers Russ Roebuck Willie Miller and Otis Greer aided the aerial attack. Bear defense pressured Gilmer, forcing turnovers and punts as the Bears pulled away despite early-season miscues.

City panel schedules hearings on zoning request

The Planning & Zoning Commission will hold two public hearings at the next meeting on Thursday Sept 15 at 7. A zoning change seeks three 66 acre tracts on North Main Street near Lafayette Blvd. Property owners Joe Jones H L McKaig Curtis Bright and Dewey Gray resubmitted the request after a 32 2 city council vote. The current SF2 zoning would change to LC. The second hearing covers Ordinance 1092 amendments affecting NS LC HC and LI.

UT System gains East Texas Chest Hospital in Tyler

The East Texas Chest Hospital becomes a unit of the University of Texas System at a Tyler ceremony marking its new status as The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler. The 266 bed facility now operates under UT System governance with ongoing expansion and teaching aims.
