Rainfall at the city water filtration plant shows a dry second half of 1975 with only a few readings kept unofficial for January through June. Fire Chief Ronnie Gothard warns against outdoor fires as grass and brushland remain tinder dry and the fire department has been active in grass fire suppression this past month.
The council lights a six item agenda with a key proposal to appoint Rick Kuehler as city secretary in the 11000 per year post upgraded with fiscal duties. They will also review a resolution to apply for two years of funding from the Texas Criminal Justice Division for a police juvenile project.
Denver visitors Mr and Mrs Ken Parrish and their five month old son enjoy a week in East Texas with Grady and family in Gladewater. Cub Pack 196 hosts a wiener roast at 5 PM Saturday October 11 at Eddie Greggston's home. Juanita Dust of Youngstown Ohio visits for the Arts and Crafts Festival and Gladewater Bears football game.
United Fund records show 43 percent of its goal achieved with $6,404.01 pledged or paid. Secretary Jo Wiley announced the target is just under halfway. Mollie Abercrombie, drive chairman, is showing a film on fund use. civic clubs may arrange viewings through the Chamber of Commerce at 845-2206.
The Bears, 5-0-0, beat Whitehouse 221-51 in offense while defense harried QB Tommy Humphreys. Coach Jack Murphy warns of a hard road at Troup, a 2-2 Tigers with a powerful passing game led by QB Jerry Daniels and receiver Arthur Franklin, as districts open with discipline and execution key.
The Watson W Wise Memorial Dialysis Center at Medical Center Hospital Tyler opened Monday night with 10 units. It serves kidney patients awaiting transplants and those with non functioning kidneys and aims to treat 25 to 35 East Texas patients, contingent on local transplant referrals.
Texaco emerged early in East Texas oil play and built a 45 year relation with Gladewater and Turnertown sites. From first wells in 1931 to modern automated operations, Texaco fostered local jobs, shaping company structure and regional policy while pumping millions of barrels of crude and billions of cubic feet of gas.
Gladewater High School senior Shane Best, son of Mr and Mrs Bill Best, has been named a commended student in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation Merit program. He ranks among 35,000 commended students nationwide based on the 1974 PSAT-NMSQT and is not advancing to the main scholarship pool. Edward C Smith, NMSC president, lauds the achievement and urges continued education for commended students.
Harvey Thomas Ales, 29, of White Oak, received a 50 year prison term from Judge Marcus Vascocu in Gregg County 188th District Court after being convicted last month of murdering his 2 year old daughter Melenda Ann Ales on February 11. He plans to appeal.
City Manager Tony Williams announced a phone survey by the Gladewater Housing Committee to assess housing needs. The sample targets 272 respondents with 90 percent accuracy, conducted the week of Oct 13 for up to two weeks as part of a housing demonstration project by the East Texas Council of Governments and the Texas Department of Community Affairs.
A Gladewater man, James Franklin Gipson, 28, was killed instantly and driver Cleophus Blalock, 37, seriously injured in a 6:55 a.m. car train collision at the Fisher Road crossing of the Texas and Pacific lines. Gipson’s funeral is set for Thursday at the Progressive Church of God in Christ with burial at Red Rock Cemetery. Gipson leaves a widow and two children. Blalock remains in critical condition at Good Shepherd Hospital with multiple injuries.
