Social Security 20 Percent Increase Hits Checks in October

Over twenty eight million recipients nationwide will receive the 20 percent increase approved by Congress and signed by President Nixon. In Gregg County twelve thousand eight hundred ninety one beneficiaries receive a total of one million six hundred forty one thousand dollars monthly. The pool includes retired workers, survivors, dependents, and disabled beneficiaries with a broad range of ages and eligibility rules. Checks usually arrive on the third of the month, but delays may occur, with a three day waiting period advised before reporting a missing payment.

General Telephone to honor 23 employees at Henderson dinner

A service awards dinner on Tuesday October 3 at Jay's Circle Restaurant Henderson will recognize 23 General Telephone Company workers totaling 534 years of service. Retirees from 1972 Thelma Byers Paul Robertson and V C Champion join Gladewater operators Margie Price Norene Parish and Audrie Davis among those honored. Don Bishop will host and H B Elam Texarkana area manager will present 25 year or longer service awards.

Muscular Dystrophy Drive Planned in Gladewater

About 73 volunteers will conduct a mothers march in Gladewater on Oct 2 to raise funds for muscular dystrophy research. Campaign treasurer is Mrs. Virginia Bates of the First State Bank. The drive highlights the incurable, often fatal disease affecting thousands, including many children, with a new experimental treatment shown in animal studies.

Construction Begins on Yamboree Exhibit Building

The Yamboree grounds on Highway 271 north see the start of a 7500 square foot modern exhibit building. President Steve Dean calls it a major milestone and says the 60 by 125 foot facility will host arts and crafts and serve as a meeting center for the year at a nominal charge.

Voter registration deadline looms before election

October 6 is the last day to register to vote for the upcoming presidential race. In Gladewater registration closes by Thursday with options at the county court house in Longview. A former editor warned that voters aged 18 and up will react to Nixon or McGovern, and urged registering and voting to have a say. An Istanbul hat law case follows about a Turk jailed for wearing a skullcap deemed forbidden.

Kilgore receives two books in Laird memorial gifts

Kilgore College Library adds two volumes donated by Joe A. Laird of Houston in memory of S. S. Laird and Ben F. Laird. Henderson Shuffler, famed Texan, will speak at the all-service club luncheon on Oct 19 during Kilgore’s Centennial events. Pioneer Festival set for Oct 19-21 features parade barbecue fireworks balloon ascension art and flower shows. Marshall officials note activity from the Texas Water Quality Board.

Bids Opened for Gladewater Public Library Construction

The Gladewater Lee Public Library project saw bids opened Thursday afternoon in the city courtroom. Attending were City Manager John Marshall architect Leland Guinn councilman Melvin Jenkins library board members and Mayor C G Johnston.
