Community calls for residents involved in Gladewater's first hundred years to contribute stories. Centennial organizers urge participation for a commemorative history to press this month, with page sponsorships priced at 100, 65, and 35 dollars.

Ford Accepts Local Pastorate in Gladewater
The Rev Billy M Ford has accepted the call of the Church of the Nazarene and will arrive in Gladewater to begin pastoral duties with his first sermon set for Sunday morning June 3. Born in Lufkin, Ford is a Lufkin High School alumnus with a BA from Stephen F Austin State University and studies at Texas A and M and the University of Oklahoma. He was reared in the Nazarene church. his mother Florence Mantooth Ford helped found the denomination. He embraced the Abundant Life message after a 1943 revival and has long held a dual calling to teach and preach.

Lions from across Texas gather in Longview June 1 to 3 for State and District 2 X2 conventions with Contessa Inn as headquarters. Briscoe visit caps Mineola centennial events
Mineola capped its 100th birthday with a governors luncheon at the high school and an 80 float parade led by Gov. Dolph Briscoe. A time capsule was buried at Mineola High School as the city marked its founding in 1873 and ties to rail history. Mark White stood in for the governor at the luncheon due to legislative duties.

The summer physical education program for all students will be held at the Broadway School gym due to water repairs at Middle School. Registration runs at Middle School until 10 a.m. Thursday or at Broadway Monday at 9 a.m. Mrs Ninnie Brewer will supervise with bus transport to the Middle School pool for swimming each morning. Buddy LaPrade will be lifeguard. The event includes notes on the city’s rail-centered history and Mineola centennial celebration with floats from Providence Belles.

RRC Allows T and P to Dismantle Gladewater Depot
The Texas Railroad Commission signed by Chairman Jim Langdon and Commissioner Byron Tunnell orders the Texas & Pacific Railroad to dismantle the Gladewater depot and discontinue its agency making Gladewater a non agency station. The order cites the May 25 application filed in Austin and notes no opposition after due notice. The depot is noted as a downtown landmark.

City property taxpayers have until June 1 to claim a 2 percent discount for early payment per City Manager John R. Marshall. For the next two months those not claiming the discount pay the regular amount. starting August 1 penalties and interest apply. After July 31 penalties and interest run at six percent per year.

Lindsey couple to mark 65th wedding anniversary
