Weekly Thursday square dancing at the Sr. Citizens Center draws crowds with professional callers. New dancers receive instruction and Bicentennial plans feature the dancers. Also notes on flag idea for Gregg County, a Norwalk High student, a lost property issue, a film at Westside Baptist, a home for a dog, hospital update, and a Masonic Lodge breakfast.
Union Grove trustees approved joining the Fast Texas Area Council of Governments with a $25 membership. They accepted the resignation of teacher coach Dan Erickson, praising him as a valuable asset as he returns to Michigan for family illness. The board also approved fund applications for lunch, Title programs, and a summer Austin workshop subsidy for teachers attending.
The rodeo office at N Main Street opens Monday with Martha Springer, former chamber manager, in charge. Hours are 8 to 5 daily. Ticket orders for the four day event have begun, with interest from out of town residents, and organizers say the rodeo should be bigger and better this year.
Rainfall reached 2.02 inches in about two hours as a Tuesday storm moved in and darkened the area by late afternoon. May totals now stand at 8.01 inches, compared with lighter rainfall at the same time last year.
The Gregg and Upshur County Citizens Band Radio Club sets a rest stop for Memorial Day weekend from Friday May 23 to Monday May 26 at the comfort station on Interstate 20 between Hallsville and Marshall in the east bound lane. Free refreshments will be offered to travelers.
EPA agents from Dallas found the $300,000 sewer cleanup met all agency requirements after inspecting the city system. City Manager Tony N. Williams said final payments will wait until private property cleanup is verified, with 75 percent reimbursement from government funds and the city covering the rest. The city has paid $238,150 to Par Utilities Inc and engineer B. L. Nelson and Associates.
Mrs. Danny Johnson former Shirley Elliott will teach this summer at the park pool. A tentative schedule is set pending pool renovations and exact opening dates. Pre registration runs May 26 to 30 with contact numbers 845-3761 or 734-4328.
Members of the George Martin American Legion Auxiliary will hold an annual poppy sale Friday May 23 in downtown Gladewater. They will work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Proceeds support disabled veterans widows and families with donations welcomed.
Gladewater High School honored students in Monday's awards program noting academic, sports, music and other achievements. Band Boosters and Rotary Club presented top bandsman and senior awards to Beth Dees and Melessa Stevens, with numerous UIL winners named in journalism, drama, choir, and speech.
