Proposed Northeast Texas health agency draws Tyler opposition

At a public hearing in Tyler the steering committee of the proposed Northeast Texas Council of Health Resources faced strong objections from local physicians and hospital administrators. Tyler doctors argued regional representation is unequal and demanded more detailed by laws and broader physician and blood bank input while stressing Smith County’s 32 percent share of region 7 doctors.

Funeral Services Held for Rolla Burris Dairy Mart Owner

Funeral services for Rolla Eugene Burris 68 were held at Malcolm Stone Chapel with ministers officiating. Burial followed at Memorial Park Cemetery. Burris died Monday at 10 25 a m after a lengthy illness. He lived in Gladewater 12 years and owned the Dairy Mart. Born July 10 1907 in Kentucky he was a WWII veteran. Survivors include widow Oddie two brothers Tom Burris Fr Worth and John Burris Holt Mo pallbearers listed.

Dr Allison Ray Hancock dies after long illness in Gladewater

Dr Allison Ray Hancock 85 of 403 Live Oak died Tuesday afternoon after a long illness. Funeral services are set for 10 a m Thursday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with officiants Carl Pyson and Rev B F Risinger. Burial in Gladewater Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers listed. Ribbon cutting for Kitchens Bakery and The Right Price Store set for 11 30 Thursday in Villa Ile Shopping Center on West Upshur Dr. Hancock a Florida native born Feb 22 1891, studied at University of Florida and Oklahoma University, moved to Gladewater in 1931, practicing over 40 years.

After an executive session the Union Grove School Board renewed contracts for the next school year for multiple staff members across elementary, middle, and high school grades. Union Grove trustees drop student insurance funding

Union Grove School District trustees in regular session decided to discontinue funding student insurance while maintaining athletic coverage. Final state funds were requested. two textbooks were adopted and vocational agriculture equipment purchase approved. Superintendent Cooper estimated past student insurance at 11 000 yearly and proposed shifting costs to students and parents through alternative coverage.

Bread Box Grand Opening in Longview at strategic intersection

The Bread Box Gulf Station opens with a grand weekend event on March 2021 at the highway 80 and 71 junction. Owner Joe Modisette of Longview offers 150 gallons of gas giveaways and three daily drawings along with free coffee and treats. Delbert McCasland manages, assisted by Shelia MecCasland and Daisy Moore, with a full food line and beer and wine. The store operates seven days a week 7 am to 11 pm and invites public attendance and potential future expansions.

Jaws of Life Demo Aids Vehicle Rescue

A demonstration shows hydraulic jaws that could free trapped drivers within minutes. Floyd Odom was trapped for four minutes after a collision between a truck and a pickup, with a wrecker and telephone pole used in his rescue. The new device promises faster, safer extrication.

Rescue unit demonstrates car-shears jaws and fund drive

Eddie Attaway of Kilgore Rescue shows jaws that can cut a car top in under two minutes. John Hampton of Foxfire sells jaw locks. Gladewater REACT Rescue Team seeks to buy the set locally. A $500 REACT fund at First St Bank receives a $250 boost from the Charmer Commerce women’s division. The jaws cost $5,000 and donations can be made at the bank.

Council selects Bedford firm for airport studies

The Gladewater city council in special session chose Knowlton English Flowers Inc of Bedford Texas to conduct engineering studies for the proposed airport improvements. City Manager Tony N. Williams will negotiate terms. the $9,600 master plan cost was federally funded. FAA funds awaiting congressional action, with state law guiding selection by quality and scope of service.

Burglary Hits Walkers' Pharmacy Repeatedly

James and Janice Walker report their pharmacy at 206 East Upshur has been entered repeatedly. Missing are Talwin and Tuinal drugs valued at $7.50, with an axe and tire tool left behind. The roof has been damaged, and the couple notes the pattern of break ins continues, but no investigation was called.
