The Lee farm near Tyler Highway will host three March Sunday tours from 2 pm to visit a log cabin rustic fence lake bird sanctuary trails and a waterfall. Tickets cost 2 per person or 5 per family with proceeds for downtown beautification and tickets available at Lee Public Library.
Birthday wishes go to Mrs. A. B. McPherson and Candy McFall as age days approach. Chamber of Commerce meets Tuesday at the Chamber building with lunch. Pet giveaways include a male Cocker Spaniel and a female white German Shepherd. Mrs. Ralph Prince offers a Lady Banksia rose cutting. Paul Bennett of Municipal Hospital Speaks at the AARP meeting Thursday March 11 at 2 pm. Sock Hop by Gladewater TARS March 6 at 7:30 pm. proceeds aid Texas Special Olympics in Austin. Mrs. Roy Gilliand dies in Oklahoma City. her husband is a former Gladewater resident.
Doris Easterling of Clyde will lead a school of instruction for the State of Texas Eastern Star in Gladewater on Tuesday with Worthy Grand Patron OD Christian of Garland and other district officers attending. A salad supper Monday evening honors the officers at the Dean Street hall, with registration at 8 a.m. Tuesday and sessions starting at 9. A lunch at noon and the American Beauty banquet at First Baptist Church follow, with Pearl Moyer as banquet ticket chair.
The 39th Gladewater Round Up Rodeo runs June 9 to 12 with added events and a larger purse as Bicentennial excitement drives attendance. Cowboys, clowns, and top ropers from Mike Cervi’s circuit will perform, including cow milking, bullfighting, and a street dance on June 8, highlighting a record four day program.
Board members meet at 7 pm to hear a progress report on the district's new vocational agriculture building. Site work is started and bidding for construction will need board approval. The old ag building will become a math lab freeing rooms in the high school. The new site lies between the high school bus barn and the football practice field. Gregg County aided with earth moving. The agenda includes superintendent reports, liability insurance renewal, land purchase feasibility, school board election, overtime pay, appraisal contract with Pritchard and Abbott, and ratification of the textbook adoption committee report.
Jim Glasgow of Rockwall and George Sheffler of Commerce outline a Northeast Texas swing for presidential candidate Ronald Reagan in the third week of April. The tour aims for maximum exposure in the First and Fourth Congressional Districts with a motorcade through much of the area and stops including Gladewater.
Milton Bolgiano of Gladewater Municipal Hospital announced that a seven member steering committee for the North East Texas Council on Health Resources aims to gain HEW approval to form a health system agency for Area 7. The group faces rivalry from NETHSA based in Texarkana and long delays cited by Gov. Briscoe over public awareness of such agencies.
City Manager Tony N Williams outlined the 1976 77 budget of 1 126 940 at a Rotary Club briefing. He noted 68 fulltime employees salaries as a major item and a 60 000 carryover from last year while stressing black numbers despite rising costs. He discussed 126 000 reimbursable sewer plant funds possibly needing a bond issue and a sewer rate rise to 3 from 2 25 with no tax increase.
Gary Williams son of Mr and Mrs Jesse Williams suffered a broken neck in a motorcycle crash Saturday. He was rushed to Municipal Hospital, then transferred to John Sealy Hospital in Galveston for ongoing hospitalization. Local fundraiser by Catfish Hut owners, Terry Barber and Juanita Walls, will donate all profits Tuesday from 3 to 9 pm to aid medical expenses.
The February report to Judge Jack Finley notes rising enforcement and fines, a new juvenile unit, and violence and theft counts. It records 34 moving violations, 60 traffic warnings, 13 DWI arrests in February, plus juvenile and court activity and a total February fines amounting to 10 148 with 84 250 for 1976.
