Dallas woman nabbed in big check forgery ring
Beverly Jean Sewell, 28, of Dallas, arrested after attempting to cash a 193.74 check at a J C Penney store. Dallas police say the ring used forged checks from Bell, Western Union, Allied Finance and Burger King, totaling about 60 000. Dozens possibly 50 or 60 people involved, with operations spanning Texas and Arkansas and possibly moving to California. Investigators expect further arrests as the probe continues.

Gladewater Cadet Program Wins State Grant
The Gladewater Police Department will use a $7 008 grant from the state Criminal Justice Division to fund its police cadet program in the second year. Two part time cadets will be salaried while they study police science and work about 20 hours weekly to gain observational experience.
