City approves 701522 budget with raises and new projects

The city council approved a 1969-70 budget of 701,522 at a regular meeting, the highest in city history, funding a $6,000 airport appropriation, raising the library budget to 10,000, and creating a 40,000 reserve for a new bond issue. Expenditures total 698,838 with employee raises and department adjustments. The meeting also authorized a nursing home project near Glade Lanes, a 170,000 permit for a Great Southwest Medical Center nursing home, and considered moving payroll and accounting to a bank data center at 200 per month. Mayor Abernathy recused himself from finance votes. a trash collection committee was appointed to study ordinance revisions.

Wells Opens New Real Estate Office in Gladewater

J. C. Wells 28, a native East Texan who moved to Gladewater from Quitman in 1966 and is a 1959 Mineola High School graduate, will hold open house at his new real estate and insurance agency at Dean Street and West Upshur on Saturday March 8. He sees strong growth ahead for Gladewater and invites the public to tour the office and facilities.
