The Gladewater Open Men's Slowpitch Softball Tournament runs August 4 to 9 with first second and third place trophies plus ten all tournament trophies. Sixteen teams compete in a double elimination format. games run 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Friday, starting 7 a.m. Saturday. Entry is $25 per team and each squad must supply a new hard softball. Contact Jimmy White at 845-2261 for registration information.

The Rev. Aubrey Pate presided Friday at 3 p.m. over funeral services for Prentiss E. Pete Davis 67 at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Gladewater Memorial Park after he died Wednesday in Mother Frances Hospital Tyler following a lengthy illness. Born in Port Gipson Mississippi he lived in Gladewater 42 years and was self employed at Gregg Salvage Co. He is survived by Grace his widow two daughters Doris Smith Garland and Betty Smith Gladewater a brother P W Davis Fort Worth six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Pallbearers were R A Cooper Emmett Arnold M E McFerren Janes Goggans Dick Hobson and G L Smith.
Gladewater Municipal Hospital board reappointed medical staff and granted two $100 semester scholarships to Dana Gwinn and Larry Thompson for Kilgore College School of Nursing. Dr. C B McKenzie was elected staff president and Dr. Glen R Kent secretary.
GHS athletic director Bill Waters announced dates for football physicals. Varsity juniors and seniors report 5 p.m. Thursday August 7 in the dressing room. Varsity sophomores report 3 p.m. Saturday August 9. Freshmen schedule within August 4-9 week with time TBA. Eighth graders split, one group at 7 a.m. August 7 and the other August 14 at Moser clinic.
Upshur County health officials report four residents await or complete rabies vaccination after animal attacks. First two confirmed cases occurred in Bettie on May 29 and July 9 from skunk encounters. Officials urge vaccinating cats and dogs, warn of bats and coyotes as reservoirs, and note vaccine protocol now includes a 21 dose series with boosters and HRIG.
A $50,000 reward offered by friends of Inez Phillips has drawn widespread attention in East Texas. Investigators believe robbery motivated the killing of the Gladewater widow on July 9, with law enforcement, including three Texas Rangers, pursuing leads as polygraph tests are arranged to narrow suspects. The reward runs until August 15.
A 3 500 acre site in Titus County transforms from forests to the Welsh Power Plant a 122 million 530 000 KW coal fired facility for SWEPCO built by Sargent and Lundy. Construction began April 1974 with a 1977 target and faces delays from heavy rains.
