Gladewater Hospital approves plans for major remodel and expansion

Gladewater Municipal Hospital board votes to remodel and enlarge business offices and laboratories, add a 20 bed wing and cardio-pulmonary lab, relocate several facilities, and pursue state approvals. Plans approved by Texas Health Facilities Commission except for cardio-pulmonary. Architect Wright notes feasibility of completing all work in one phase to save time and money. Construction to begin after licensing and bidding, with total project phased but future beds restored to 64 plus expanded space.

A lengthy city council session ends with Communications Properties Inc canceling Gladewater Cable TV service on August 1 after rejecting a 6.95 dollar basic rate compromise. The firm cited a 300,000 dollar investment and potential channel 39 addition as reasons for the stance amid ongoing fire protection funding disputes with Upshur County and other counties. The council plans a public hearing August 12 on SWEPCO rate increases and approves airport engineering for runway extension with FAA funding.

Chronister Fund Established for Mrs Chronister

Gladewater friends set up the Mrs Wendell Chronister Fund at First State Bank to help with hospital bills in Dallas. Mrs Chronister has been in intensive care at St Pauls for six weeks after brain surgery and remains critically ill. When possible she will be moved to Galveston for 80 days of specialized treatment.

Football Physicals Schedule Announced by School

Athletic Director Bill Waters lists mandatory football physicals for 8th to 12th graders. Sessions run August four to twelve at Fieldhouse and Moser Clinic with times 7 p.m. for ninth grade and 7 a.m. for others. Coaches will notify players when to report due to large 8th grade numbers.

John Rex Franklin 80 Dies. Rites Set Sunday

John Rex Franklin of Gladewater and Rt. 2 died Friday at 1 15 am after a short illness. Funeral services are at 2 pm Sunday at Locust Grove Baptist Church with Rev. J A Allen and Rev. Leslie Dyer. burial at Locust Grove Cemetery. He was a WW I veteran, retired farmer, member of Westside Baptist Church, survived by widow Pauline, son Julian R. Franklin, daughter Ellen J. Johnston, sister Decia Hartzog, 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Langley rites held Saturday for Mrs Irma Langley

Funeral services for Mrs. Irma Lee Langley 64 were held Saturday at 11 in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel. Murphy Phillips Jr minister of Quitman and Center Church of Christ officiated. She died Thursday at 5 pm in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Born October 5 1911 in Prairieville Texas she lived in Gladewater nine years and was a Church of Christ member. Survivors include her mother Ada Wilson four sisters Opal Hicks Plano Katie Ferguson city Joel Cox and Lucille Dunn Ore City a brother Leo A Wilson Belen New Mexico and several nieces and nephews.

Two robbers hit 7 11 store on Upshur in early morning

Police search for two black male suspects after a 3 25 a m armed robbery at 7 11 No 4 400 W Upshur. Clerks tied with socks. about 119 dollars taken including 50 from register 45 from clerk 24 from customer. No injuries. Suspects described as 26 with 5 10 slender and 19 with 5 7 slender. older man carried a .38 snub nose. Investigation continues.
