Gladewater Welcomes Teenage Firefighter On 1967 Oil Tank Blaze

A 16 year old hitchhiker Wayne Mihalik joined Gladewater firefighters during a dramatic July 4 1967 oil tank blaze. The General American tank held 175 000 gallons and burned for days lighting the night sky. Mihalik worked 12 hours amid scorching heat and steam while crews fought to prevent oil from reaching homes and a nearby church.

PROOFS discusses platform at Monday meeting in Gladewater

PROOFS adopts a 10 point platform at the American Legion Hut but takes no other action due to a small turnout. Jarol Walls presided as Dub Murray presented the platform and Jay Banks debated the ninth pm beer sale repeal. Briscoes Help Break Ground for ETCH Expansion

Gov Dolph Briscoe and Janey Briscoe joined 150 guests at a ground breaking for ETCH the East Texas Chest Hospital near Tyler for a 17.2 million six floor 320 bed wing funded by the 64th Legislature. The project aims to advance patient care research and education with completion expected in 30 months.

F A Harper dies after brief illness in East Texas

Frances Albert Harper 66 of Route 2 died Friday at 2 35 am in Good Shepherd Hospital Longview after a brief illness. Funeral 2 pm Saturday at Abundant Life Temple with Rev Paul Chance and Rev John Kershaw officiating. Burial Mt Pisgah Cemetery Wood County. Thomas withdraws from city council race

Mayor Pro Tem George Thomas at 41 quits the city council contest citing purely personal reasons. He praised City Manager Tony N Williams and urged harmony as nine candidates seek four seats. He notes long service as a volunteer fireman and community activist and says the decision was family based.

City considers lower tax rate after property revaluation

City Manager Tony N. Williams said a first session with Pritchard Abbott on the recently completed property tax revaluation will require reexamining the proposed 1.90 tax rate. He indicated considerably lower rates are possible and noted another budget workshop to discuss a slimmed down 1977 78 budget that would curb new equipment purchases while not affecting the 18 percent pay raises.

Council weighs tax exemption plea and rezoning issues

The city council Thursday heard a request from a group representing local AARP Chapter 2161 for a $3,000 Homestead Exemption for seniors. A public hearing was held on two rezoning requests and a new lease agreement was approved.

Hospital board to issue revenue bonds for expansion plan

Gladewater Municipal Hospital directors in a called session voted to publish intentions to issue $595000 in revenue bonds in two series to fund a three phase expansion. Series 1977-A 125000 and Series 1977-B 70000 will be offered publicly and secured by revenue not tax monies. A cardio pulmonary lab is under construction and a 20 bed expansion is planned with a certificate of need. Work on the coronary care unit will begin once the certificate is secured. The board also approved bylaws personnel policies and referred engineering work for the sewer project to Nelson and Associates with Step 2 details to follow.
