Gladewater Bears fall in quarterfinals to Decatur Eagles
The Gladewater Bears finish the season 12 1 after a 29 21 loss to Decatur in the state playoffs at Rockwall. QB Joe Louvier played with a broken finger and stars Windell Lee Leonard Parkerson Reggie Owens Kelly Murphy and others battled through injuries as the Bears claimed regional champions while ending as the best team in Gladewater history.

Gladewater Detective Brown Promoted to Sergeant
Gladewater Police Detective Bill Brown, 27, was promoted to sergeant last Friday by Chief Jay Banks. Brown joined the force in 1972 after prior service as a Gregg County deputy and Overton officer. A Longview native, he is married to Marty Wilson of Kilgore.

The acres of spring bulbs azaleas and pines draw visitors during three March Sundays from 2 pm to dusk. Tickets are 2 per person and 5 for families.

Gladewater Christmas Parade Sets City Record
Gladewater’s Christmas parade drew the largest crowds ever with 82 units, including Prairie View A&M color guard, Kilgore College Ranger band, and area high school bands. Floats competed for prizes of 75, 50, 25 and 10 dollars, with First Baptist Church and Glacewater High School FTA winning top prizes. Lambda Xi elected new Rotary Club officers for 1976, while Beta Sigma Phi and Gladewater Public Schools placed in the float contest. Santa attended as the Chamber of Commerce kept parade routes clear of an afternoon freight train.

GHS teacher hurt in robbery attempt at Gladewater
Gladewater metalwork instructor Harold Whitlock was struck by a robber on a dark road while a staged pickup of a boat ended in assault. Two men, James Michael Stuart and Michael Dewitt McDonald, were arrested on aggravated assault and aggravated robbery charges and held on bonds totaling 30,000. McDonald posted bond. Stuart remained jailed with a pistol found on his person.

Elisabet Wahlquist 18, an exchange student from Linkoping Sweden, spoke to Gladewater Rotary about life in Sweden and its history. She described Sweden as the size of Florida with 8.2 million people, northern areas in the Arctic circle, and a long Viking era transitioning to Christianization in the 10th century.
