City fights to halt UG incorporation vote

Council hears eight appearances on annexation and zoning

The city council will hold a regular meeting Thursday with eight speakers about proposed annexation ordinance 1102 for 190.1 acres along US 271 north, first reading then final Sept 8, plus three zoning hearings on SF 2 to LC, SF-3 to NS, and SF-8 upgrade, and a ETCOG board representative appointment.

Briscoe Praises Texas Crime Package At Banquet

Gov Dolph Briscoe told the Texas Crime Prevention Association audience that the state backs the first function of government and praised the crime package passed last session. He highlighted two constitutional amendments to expand the Court of Criminal Appeals and tighten bail for repeat offenders, noting nine items have become law including stronger measures against organized crime and drug smuggling along the border.

Registration Opens for Gladewater Kindergartens

Gay Avenue School will register kindergarten first and second graders starting Thursday Aug 11. Office hours are weekdays 8 to 12 and 1 to 4. Pre registered students must complete records before homeroom assignments, with requirements including birth certificate immunization and age limits.

George Gwyn rites held Wednesday

Funeral services for George Goodwin Gwyn 2312 W Gay were held Wednesday at 3 PM in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev Francis C Cady officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Park under Malcolm Stone Funeral Home. Gwyn a Gladewater resident for three years died Sunday at 4 45 AM after a lengthy illness. Born in Fairmont WV he moved to Gladewater from Oil City PA. He was a retired farmer and Methodist. Survivors include wife Bernice two sons Erwin Gwyn Seneca Falls NY and Gerry Cable Bufort SC two daughters Mrs Nancy Huth Harvard NE and Mrs Sandy Lacy Austin two brothers John Gwynn Fairmont WV and James Gwynn Fairmont WV a sister Mrs Margaret Blancett Lancaster OH and 160 grandchildren. Pallbearers were Joe Ramsey C E Hancoke James Smith Luke Fisher Wilson Godfrey Charles Hopson A V Henderson and Raymond Addington.

City to Break Ground on Gladewater Airport Expansion Runway

The Gladewater airport project starts Thursday with building a peninsula for a 3400 foot runway. The 75 foot wide strip sits on a peninsula about 11 feet high and 200 feet wide. Contractors John A. Petty Construction, Longview, began July 11 under a June 16, 1977 award, with a 200 workday plan but a 90 to 100 day target if weather cooperates. Ceremonies include FAA, Gregg County, Knowlton-English Flowers, city officials and Chamber members.
