Mirror Wins TSTA School Bell Award

The Gladewater Mirror is named a 1970 School Bell Award winner by the Texas State Teachers Association for outstanding coverage of education news and public understanding of school achievements. The honor was awarded by a five judge panel after nomination by the Gladewater local TSTA.

Services Tuesday For Mrs Brummett

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Louise Brummett were held Tuesday morning at 10 30 in the Queensboro Baptist Church Shreveport Louisiana. She died Sunday evening after an extended illness. She lived in Gladewater since 1950 with her daughter Mrs M E McFerren. Burial was in Forest Park Cemetery Shreveport. Malcolm Stone Funeral Home arranged the services. She was born July 10 1880 in Minden Louisiana and is survived by two daughters a son a sister and four grandchildren. Pallbearers included Mogen Hoy D W Wade and others.

East Texas Quarter Horse Show slated for Friday

The 23rd annual East Texas Quarter Horse Breeders Show and races run Friday and Saturday August 7 8 at Round Up Rodeo grounds Gladewater. Mayor Holcomb urged city participation as Rus Lloyd reports large entries from out of state and big crowds for five daily races with bleacher seating and a $1 spectator charge.

Kindergarten Records Must Be Completed Reminder

Charles Hopson principal of Gay Avenue Elementary asks parents to finish kindergarten records this year or children cannot attend. Records must include immunization shots and a state birth certificate. School office hours are Monday to Friday from 8 until 4.

Reading Program Ends Tuesday at Gladewater Library

Gladewater Public Library wraps up its summer reading program Tuesday at 1 p.m. with certificates from the Texas State Library and an age-group book auction. Bookworm dollars reward readers of 12 books. books due by August 7.

School Opening Plans Go Smoothly

Superintendent Roy Johnson reports school opening nearly ready with roof air conditioners at Gay Ave School and gym floor refinishing underway. August 24 start date set the earliest ever. Preschool begins August 10 with the GHS band under Buzz Messner. Football physicals start August 12 at Bear Stadium. Two-a-day drills begin August 17. Teacher workshop August 18 to 21. School year extended to 180 teaching days with 10 month contracts and in service days.
