New Office Building Planned for Three Doctors in Gladewater
John Paul Tallent, builder, announced ground breaking for a brick building between Upshur and Gregg Streets across from Gladewater Municipal Hospital to house three doctors offices. Two suites already leased with a cardiology GP opening this month and another prospect for fall. The project includes 1,000 square feet per suite, central climate control, carpet and tile, and completion in six to eight weeks.

Gladewater officials outline enrollment targets and start dates for the new term. New GHS registrations run Aug 7–8 with schedules ready Aug 11–12. the year opens Aug 18 with a 8:20 a.m. assembly. The calendar lists in service days Aug 13–15 and a Labor Day holiday, plus other breaks and quarter dates.

At 8 a.m. on Saturday August 2 cables were connected as maintenance workers stood by. The complex equipment whirred and clicked signaling a new era for Gladewater telephone customers. By noon the old operator switchboard was taken offline.

Transition to automated dialing ends local switchboard era
The Gladewater exchange will switch to fully automated dialing with one plus and O plus systems. Long distance will route through Longview or Kilgore, reducing operator staff from about 60 to none. Local bills can be paid at the office, which stays open, and a small maintenance and repair team remains on site.

Charles Hopson principal says kindergarten through second grade children entering Gladewater schools must register starting Monday. The office is open 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Students with complete records or who finished last term are enrolled and need not register. Parents are urged to register early to secure a home room before the August 18 opening.

Taylor rites set Sunday in First Baptist Church
Funeral services for Mrs. Faye Grace Taylor 78 of 525 Melba will be held Sunday at 3 PM at the First Baptist Church with Rev. B. F. Risinger Jr. officiating. Burial in Memorial Park. she died Friday in Good Shepherd Hospital Longview from a heart attack. Survived by daughter Maxine Hubener of Shreveport, two sisters from Kansas, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
