Apple Harvest Fete Two Weekends At South Mountain Fairgrounds

Adams County hosts two Apple Harvest Weekends on October 7-8 and 14-15 at South Mountain Fairgrounds Arendisville with the Upper Adams Jaycees Adams County Fruit Growers Association Arendisville Fire Company and Geburg Travel Council organizing. The events feature butter making cider pressing apple bobbing pie eating contests arts crafts shows antique displays farm equipment and free rides plus an Apple Queen US A contest October 14-15 at the Sheraton Inn Sawyerd. Admission is 5 for adults and free for children under 16.

Remembrance Day Declared For Pope John Paul I

The Most Rev Joseph T Daley bishop of 15 counties in South Central Pennsylvania proclaims tomorrow as a day of remembrance and prayers for Pope John Paul I who died Friday morning. Churches may drape in the resurrection color and place the Paschal candle in the sanctuary. Daley spoke at a noon Mass and noted the sudden death and acceptance of gods will. He planned to join global bishops on their first official visit with the Pope on Oct 16.

Midway Firemen Receive $10000 Federal Ambulance Grant

Midway Fire Co ambulance corps in Adams County becomes the first in the county to receive a $10,000 federal grant for a new 1979 Chevrolet Horton 500 mobile rescue ambulance. The grant supports purchase of the unit for about $31,500, replacing a 1968 Cadillac ambulance. Old unit to be sold upon arrival in mid January.

Shapp to Keynote Handicap Conference at Gettysburg Inn

Governor Milton J. Shapp will keynote the Governors Committee on Employment of the Handicap at the Gettysburg Sheraton Inn. The event runs 10 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. with a 1 p.m. luncheon. Theme is Overcoming Institutional Barriers. Awards include Employers of the Year and Handicapped Pennsylvanian of the Year.

Adams County Sees 481 New Voters Amid Registration Push

Registration in Adams County rose to 481 new voters last week as 70 joined. Republicans added 33, Democrats 27 and 44 nonpartisan with one Constitutionalist. Totals since opening: 14 Republicans, 192 Democrats, 44 nonpartisan, 1 Constitutionalist. Deadline looms in October before the general election.

A memorial Mass for Pope Jean Paul I will be held on Mi Man's College campus in Emmonisburg. Mi St Mares Seminal James Forker of Mi St Mary's College and campus priests will celebrate in the college chapel. College and seminary choirs will provide music as the public is welcome.

Vandalism to State Highway Signs on Upswing in Pennsylvania

PennDOT faces about a $1 million statewide cost from vandalized highway signs.
