Fire Destroys Hemlock Inn At Narrows Distance

A 150000 fire leveled the Hemlock Inn two miles west of Arendisville on Route 234 early today. Firefighters from Arendisville with aid from Biglerville and Cashtown fought a 70 by 32 foot wooden frame blaze reaching 200 feet high, with investigators considering a faulty bug lamp as the likely cause. Authority figures report possible arson not ruled out. samples go to Harrisburg for analysis. Owner Robert Eicholtz weighs rebuilding as the structure, atop mountain land, was built in the 1930s near aHemlocks forest.

Hospital seeks community input for Archer care plans

At a public meeting Warner County Hospital officials led by William Myers urged residents to share ideas. The discussion touched on hospital ownership, entrance changes from Washington Street, staffing, lab costs, and a 24 percent rise in care expenses as part of planning by the administration, with a meeting scheduled for October 16.

Adams County Public Library Receives United Way Support

The Adams County Public Library served 1.00 countians last year, up 26 percent, funded by United Way. The library operates the main facility and a bookmobile, offers school programs, homebound services, nursing homes, and senior meal support at little to no charge. It is among 16 agencies sharing in current United Way fundraising.

CETA probe finds no irregularities in Adams County

State labor department says no irregularities found so far in a statewide CETA summer youth program probe begun after a Bradford County complaint. The investigation covers 22 balance of state counties with Adams included for its extensive CETA offerings. About 205 local youths from disadvantaged lanes in Adams were placed at 46 nonprofit sites for a nine week program. Youths ranged from 14 to 21 years old.

Tyrone Township Drafts Zoning Plan With Agricultural Focus

Robert G. Decker of Engineering & Associated Design Services outlined four zoning types for Tyrone Township at a public meeting held at the Heidersburg Fire Hall. Active agricultural zones would be basic, with provisions for a forested inactive zone and limited residential and commercial industrial zones. Decker emphasized restricting other uses to protect primary agricultural use while allowing some compatible developments. Public input will shape a zoning ordinance, with follow up hearings planned and continued coverage on Page 2.

NPS Architect Seeks Lincoln Square Walking Mall Concept

National Park Service Mid Atlantic Region historian Magaziner outlined a walking mall plan for Lincoln Square Gettysburg and adjacent streets at the HGAC dinner. He proposed closing blocks of Baltimore York Chambersburg and Carlisle Streets and restoring facades, with jitney shuttles from nearby parking, but stressed need for studies before any action.

Bendersville Council Tightens Bicycle and Traffic Rules

Littlestown Keeps Paper Burning Rule In Place

Littlestown borough council voted to retain the ordinance allowing only burning of paper products during daylight hours. They discussed possible changes but felt the current rule prevents confusion and addresses illegal burning at the sewer plant. The secretary will seek dumpsters to remove burning materials and the fire department asked to move voting to the TAC room to avoid fire-call confusion.

The New York Renaissance Band, an 11 member group playing 30 instruments from Renaissance and medieval times, starts Adams County Community Concerts this season on October 28. Dr Nanamaker from Getts Music describes the instrument range and performance context, noting lute as central and the use of reed and wind instruments in intimate hallless venues.
