Will Nominate 90 Places In County For The Natl Register

Adams County will select about 40 sites for detailed study to list 10 properties on the National Register of Historic Places. The HGAC survey covers 1300 to 1860 era structures, with 3 000 to 4 000 total sites. Next phase advances east to west, excluding Gettysburg and Hunterstown. Volunteers are urged to help interview owners and support the Own-A-Brick program in Lincoln Square.

Cows Wander Onto Road Three Die In Collision

Robert A Dudley Jr 35 of Newport News Va escaped injury when his tractor trailer struck and killed three cows trespassing on US road three miles south of Herdlersburg at 1 pm Wednesday State Police said the northbound GMC tractor trailer sustained moderate damage and the cattle owned by William Martin of York Springs were killed.

Antique Show To Draw 25000 Here

Gettysburg prepares for the Second Eleventh Semi Annual Outdoor Antique Show with 180 dealers from 12 eastern states and the District of Columbia. The event, sponsored by the Gettysburg Retail Merchants Association, runs 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday across center square and nearby blocks. Dr Frank Fife Dies First Head of Md Synod

Funeral services for Rev J Frank Fife will be held at Ascension Lutheran Towson with interment in Shrewsbury. The 78 year old retired leader died Tuesday after collapsing at his Stoneleigh home. He served as Maryland Synod head from 1949 to 1988 and earlier led Holy Comforter in Govans and Woodsboro churches. He held national church posts and boards and earned Gettysburg College degree in 1926 plus seminary education. He is survived by his wife Evelyn Sweitzer and a brother Samuel.

Seminary Given 26500 Grant

The Aid Association For Lutherans awarded 26500 to the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg for 1978 79. Of this, 34100 funds student scholarships and 7500 supports faculty including a retreat. Enrichment of church music receives 7400 for a new organ and workshops. The remaining 7500 funds in service continuing education including the Martin Luther Colloquium Spring Convocation Independent Study Programs and Graduate Study Scholarships.

Adams Planning Unit Reviews Subdivisions Hearings

Adams County Planning Commission continued its review of the revised subdivision code to be used in Gettysburg Biglerville New Oxford York Springs and McSherrystown. Provisions ban building in flood plains until a 100 year map is ready and outlaw rear alleys for single family homes. The plan also replaces a 1960s scheme and includes a 600 acre Amegrar egg farm project near Heidlersburg with facilities for six to ten workers and up to one million laying hens. The commission approved single lot subdivisions for Clair Izler and Charles Alwine and elected Mrs Davis secretary after Elmer Cashman’s death, the commission’s last charter member.

Emmitsburg Planning and Zoning approved a plan to annex about 80 acres for roughly 250 dwellings tied to town sewer capacity. No local residents attended the meeting as developers led by Edgar G De Laski outlined site access, water needs, and potential plan changes amid drought and low density zoning constraints.

Gettysburg Cerebral Palsy Fund Bill Advances

The Pennsylvania House unanimously passed Bill 2704 funding the Adams County adult rehabilitation program for cerebral palsy. Chief sponsor Rep Kenneth J Cole of Gettysburg said the $7,060 appropriation could save the current program, which might be discontinued without the aid. The bill moves to the Senate for a likely vote next week.

Hearing Set In Klunk Post Suspension Case

Adams County Judge Oscar F. Spicer has ordered Magistrate T. Carroll Klunk to appear for an Oct. 19 hearing to show why he should not be permanently suspended. Klunk was briefly suspended Aug. 31 after an audit flagged irregularities in the office’s bookkeeping and fiscal management. Magistrate John Zepp has handled Klunk’s district since the office reopened Sept. 13. Robert E Campbell, attorney for the county auditor, had no comment.

East Berlin Woman Killed In Accident

A two car crash on East Berlin York Road led to the death of Beverly Eichelberger, 44, and serious injuries to Dorothy Latenea, 33, while Wade Altland, 20, faced homicide and hit and run charges after fleeing. Altland turned himself in nine hours later and was arraigned for homicide by vehicle and related offenses.

Three Judges Play Lead Roles in Adams County Courts

For the first time in Adams County history, three judges will preside Friday. Judge Oscar F. Spicer, president judge, will lead the criminal trials in the main courtroom. Judge Keith Quigley, loaned from Perry County, will hear a separate criminal trial in the law library. At 11 am, Judge Walter P. Wells of Potter County will preside at a criminal hearing in the courthouse.
