McSherrystown Senior Center Faces Possible Closure

About 30 McSherrystown seniors protested to the Adams County Office for Aging asking it to run the town's senior center which is slated to close October 1 for lack of funding. CFNP staffer Rita Deutsch said the center began in April 1977 as a pilot project with $23,000 from the Community Services Administration and has since seen funding priorities shift. She warned CSA funds for another year are unlikely and a decision will not come before Oct. 1. roughly 60 elders currently receive meals at the center.

Gettysburg Senior Scholars Seminar on Computers

Gettysburg College hosts the 1978 79 Senior Scholars Seminar from September 1 to November 16 on computers and human communication. Twelve experts will present public lectures and meet with eleven advanced students. Topics include time sharing networks data banks satellites and the social and legal issues of computing.

Adams County Assessor's Association to Meet Tonight

The Adams County Assessor's Association will meet at 8 tonight at the North Gettysburg Office of the Adams County National Bank correcting an earlier notice that listed The Gettysburg National Bank. President George C. Fissel confirms the revised location.

Court Orders Klunk Office Reopened

Judge Oscar Spicer ordered the office of Magistrate T Carrell Klunk be reopened though Klunk remains under suspension. Magistrate John Zepp II will continue in the district during a forthcoming audit and investigation. The court administrator ordered Klunk’s keys documents and books turned over to Zepp from the closed office.

AFS Students Arrive For Year At Gettysburg High

Two American Field Service students arrive to attend Gettysburg High School for the year. Norway student Bente Marii Vaage stays with Mr and Mrs Robert Weikert and daughter Beth in Woodcrest. Maria Edith Sandoval from El Salvador stays with Mr and Mrs Waldo Hartman and daughter Stacy. Both are the eldest of their siblings with parents in technical, administrative roles.

President Marcos Not In Plane Crash

Manila AP report states a presidential plane crashed while attempting to land in a thunderstorm. At least 32 killed on board and on houses struck below. President Ferdinand E Marcos and Imelda were not aboard. Those aboard included security staff and journalists returning from the north.

Gettysburg Firemen Approve 1979 Budget Plan

Gettysburg firemen approved a 1979 operating budget of 135,700 with a 3 percent rise from last year’s 110,000. President James Nett noted major spending on restroom refurbishment and utilities. The plan covers building renovations, equipment repairs, ambulance supplies, and debt reduction, expecting 75,100 in revenue to cover a 40,600 shortfall.

Anniversary Day at Gettysburg Lutheran Home Saturday

The 8th Annual Anniversary Day hosted by the Auxiliary to the Lutheran Homes will be held Saturday September 16 at the Gettysburg Lutheran Home northeast of the square along old Route 15N. Public Meeting Planned On Adams County Child Services

A public meeting on the county child protective services is set for October 19 at 7 30 p m in the courthouse. The forum was outlined during a Tuesday evening discussion on child abuse on the Issues and People program on WGET, with Charles Sanger the Adams County child protective services supervisor and Mrs June Camac, director of Children's Services, continuing last week's discussion.
