15 Hurt in 10 Weekend Auto Crashes
Three persons admitted and 12 others treated at area hospitals after Labor Day weekend accidents on county highways. A Maryland couple were admitted at Hanover Hospital after a Route 140 collision near Littlestown. Bree Patterson, 17, and Patricia Warns, 16, were treated. Allen Maisland, 21, Littlestown, driver of the second car, was not far. State police said Wartland lost control to avoid a southbound auto, causing the crash. An East Berlin couple and a New Oxford motorist were treated after a collision on Route 30 at Cross Keys. Relinds Shelieman, 17, suffered a broken jaw, leg, and facial injury. Kenneth Shaffer, 37, sustained injuries to his eye and head. Shaffer pulled his Cadillac from a private drive into Shelieman's eastbound Lincoln Highway path. Damages were $300 each. Rabine, 47, assisting at the scene, was struck by a passing car. Two others were hurt in a Route 140 collision near Mt. Joy bypass. Mary Little, 72, and Margaret Little, 80, treated at Warner Hospital. The Gettysburg fire company ambulance assisted. Continued on Page 3.

Hijacked Pan Am 747 Blown Up by Guerrillas in Cairo

A mattress fire in a bed at the Elder Building on South Seton Avenue in Emmitsburg forced five apartment occupants to flee early Sunday. Wilbur Ridge woke to flames, threw water on the mattress, and escaped toward the firehouse. Firefighters quickly removed the mattress and cleared smoke. Damage was estimated at about 100 dollars. The building also houses the Chronicle Press office. Later, a field fire burned about an acre near the Robert Baer farm three miles south of Emmitsburg.
