Hanover Man Charged With Local Thefts
Joseph B. Smuth, 20, formerly of Hanover St and now living in Hanover, faces three counts of theft by unlawful taking. Police say he stole a RCA portable radio, a AM FM clock radio, and a Sony portable TV from the Gettysburg Fire Department and a home on West Middie Street. Smuth was a fire department member at the time and waived preliminary hearing, awaiting county court trial. He was released on nominal bail.

County Farmers Meet at PFA Policy Session
The policy development committee of the Farmers Association met at the Western Inn to review policy suggestions from the 43 county units. Cashtown Fire Crews Respond to Two Alarms
Cashtown firemen answered two minor alarms on Thursday and early Friday. A grass fire near Mr Eds Store on Route 300 West was found to be a controlled brush operation by Paul Reason. no fire suppression was needed. An early morning alarm at Pine Mountain Home near Caledonia State Park was a detector malfunction. Additionally Pennsville firemen aided Hanover Borough Police at a Westminster Road accident, staying about 30 minutes.

Junk Yard Cleanup Moves Forward After PennDOT Promise
PennDOT plans to finish removing tires and scrap metal from the Gettysburg area salvage yard once inventory removals are complete. W. Woods Crouse, owner of the nine acre site on Gettysburg Littlestown Road, was promised final appraisals after the yard was condemned in 1974 under the Junk Yard Act. A 1977 settlement with Wade Crouse’s estate and a separate agreement for Crouse’s land inventory were part of the case, with ongoing efforts to ensure the yard is never used as a salvage center again. PennDOT stated a late month cleanup will proceed to finalize the settlement and appraisal.
