The Gettysburg National Bank hosts an annual apple show in its New York Street lobby. Exhibits open all day to 10 PM with cash prizes for best and largest apples to be awarded Friday. Miss Mildred L. Adams will unveil over twenty dishes featuring apples this evening. Continued in the next page.
John E Millaimes, appointed county sealer for weights and measures, made his first arrest this week. He nabbed a coal hauler, Clarence Krebs Sha Simpkin, on hauling a short weight load. Krebs was arraigned before Justice Joe Prate Straley in New Oxford and fined $10 on each charge plus costs.
Two pairs have filed applications for marriage licenses at the clerk of the courts office. John Witla Messner and his partner, Charles M4 Messier and spouse, both of Hanover, alongside Aona Matdilla Breighner daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Bruehner of Kittustown. Albert Racert Marasco of Smithport and Bridget Veronicas Burnuhosky of Austin, P I E are listed.
Ankara reports Turkey signed a mutual aid pact with Britain and France at Golapm, noting the treaty allows neutrality if Britain, France, and Soviet Russia go to war. It confirms aid in the eastern Mediterranean, defense of Romania and Greece, and diplomatic talks on Balkan issues, with Weygand and Wagelty present.
Berlin reports Adolf Hitler declared the formal annexation of Pomorze Pommerciten and Potist tip per Silesia, essential Polish provinces, as part of Germany expanding borders amid wartime actions.
Stock and fixtures of Baumgardner's bakery on Baltimore Street were sold at sheriff's sale for $203,566. The sale listed Charles and C. Anna Baumgardner of Gettysburg as the property owners. An interpleader halted the automobile portion of the sale at 1:30 this afternoon. Sheriff B. B. Bixler led the auction.
K. S Pachtinger, assistant manager at the G Murphy Avenue and ten cent store on Baltimore Street, has been transferred to the assistant managership of the company’s Harrisburg store. He will begin his new duties on Friday. He will be replaced here by W Schmidt.
William M. Grove of Dillsburg retired farmer died Wednesday at his home at age 61. He is survived by his wife and children and a large extended family including Lyn Stough Swif Stough Earl Hoffman Walter Grove and Earl Rules. Thirteen grandchildren also survive. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 1 30 PM at Barren’s Lutheran Church near Duisburg with burial in the church cemetery. George Young pastor. Continued on Page Two.
Corroded motor and fuselage parts recovered by the trawler Plymouth may belong to a missing plane linked to Cheston Eshelman, the Carlisle youth reported rescued after his rented craft sank off Georges Banks. Officials seek engine numbers or an inscription to confirm identity.
Two quarter mile speedometer test courses are marked along the Lincalty Alley and Marrisburg highway to test motorists speedometer accuracy. Governor state Highway Secretary Lamont Hughes directs the setup with six signs per course and a 4 inch line across each measured quarter mile. The tests require 18 seconds at the legal 55 mph to traverse.
Fifty four representatives of 10 Adams banks and guests dined on turkey as Littlestown held its October meeting. William B P Geren spoke on revised Federal Housing regulations, with A H Thompson of Thompson and Groshon addressing mortgage topics. An upcoming reorganizational meeting is planned for November 15 at Hotel Gattysburg with officers to be elected.
Evanston Illinois resident H Morris reported to state motor police that he misplaced a pocketbook with $1440 and papers in a Greyhound restaurant on North Washington Street early Wednesday. The incident was referred to Borough Officer Charles W. Culp for investigation.
Twenty four members attended the Hirst meeting of the Adams County Principals Association held Wednesday in the Arendtsville school. Plans were laid for three county wide elementary meetings this term focusing on The Exceptional Child. Discussion on secondary leader meetings and teacher rating cards due to tenure changes followed. A pork and sauerkraut dinner was provided by Hume economics students. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday November 43 at York Springs.
Fairview school at Stubau, closed Tuesday by county health officer William J. Shields, was reopened this morning after cleanup. Several scarlet fever cases prompted the closure. no new confirmed cases yet, though suspicion remains. In another item, Willand Glass, about 40, sought since July 24, 1987, was arrested after a car theft report led to his detention. he gave a false name before admitting identity and was jailed while authorities arrange contact with his wife.
Henry Creager Ott 72, a retired bookkeeper, died Wednesday evening at his home in New Oxford R 2 from a heart attack. He worked in Baltimore for Steveson and Company for five years and was a Lutheran church member in Bullimore. Survived by brother Charles near New Oxford and sisters Margaret and Lillia Otto in Baltimore. Funeral services Saturday at residence with Rev George F Shelter at Me w Oxford, interment New Oxford Cemetery. Friends may call Friday after noon at home.
Thehard Wright of York was arrested on the Lincoln highway by state police and charged with driving without his headlights burning. The charge will be filed before Justice William D. Brown of Tunterstown. Names of Mr and Mrs Ralph Hoddlong were omitted from a list at the wed anniversary dinner for Mrs and Mrs G G Slonaker.
St. Albans Vermont marked the 1864 raid that saw 22 Confederate raiders seize 208000 dollars from three banks near the Canadian border. Fourteen raiders were arrested in Canada and later released. five Walders including Lt Bennett H Young were recaptured but Canadian charges were dropped.
A missionary advancement day program will be held Sunday evening at 7:30 at Mt Tabor United Brethren Church. Mrs Lana Zech of Fayetteville will be the guest speaker, with special music on the program.
George Myers of Virginia Mills reportedly set a record for apple picking by filling 208 bushel baskets in 10 hours at the B. B. Beamer orchard.
Roy Statey of Fairfield was operated on today for acute appendicitis at Warner Hospital. Wilhatr Rice from Baltimore Street received treatment for a laceration beside the right eye. Elizabeth Rinedoltur, Mrs Norbert Grimm, Mrs den Riley, and Robert Woodwerdd were admitted as patients. Mrs Waugh Fier of cettysbirg R. D. was discharged.
The Women’s Service Guild of the Christ Taibelsth church met October at the church. Mrs. Bert ram H Suitzer presided. Reports covered communions, flower and kitchen donations, and a mirrored pastor’s study. A large expanded visiting committee was named to assist the pastor. A guild rummage sale yielded 71 dollars profit.
Five thousand youths in Pennsylvania can secure part time work through the Midionar Youth Administration. The county quota favors youths from relief families or low income backgrounds. Most 18 to 23 year olds will work in construction and reclamation while girls enter clerical, recreational, and stenographic roles. Applications are open at county NYA offices. Nearby county quotas are Cumberland 40, Franklin 40, York 150, with others listed as applicable.
Marsby C. Little assistant superintendent of Adams County public schools attended a two day District No. 2 Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers conference in Lewisburg with central Pennsylvania workers. He participates in an evening panel directed by Dr. P G Davis Bucknell University education head.
From sixty tryouts at the Bigteryme auditorium fourteen Adams county 4-H members were selected to speak on farm securities or perform vocal and instrumental numbers. The 15 minute segment is part of a National Achievement Day program and the Farm and Home hour on November 4. York county members will share the hour with Adams county and the United States Marine Band will present a 15 minute musical program before and after the two county performances.
Adams County officers asked farmers and poultrymen to mark their flocks and maintain records as chicken thefts rise. Private Joseph F. Bushey reported over twenty thefts or attempts this year while a Wednesday raid on John Brough’s Bendersville poultry house failed when the fleeing thieves escaped as the car wouldn’t start.
A Gettysburg citizen donated five student memberships in the Gettysburg Concert Association to benefit high school students. Dorothy Brindle, music supervisor, will determine who receives the memberships. Recipients may attend all three winter concerts or be allocated per concert.
