Honor Eisenhower Memory at Programs on Gettysburg Campus

Observances for General Eisenhower's memory were held on Gettysburg College grounds Friday marking his 88th birthday. Dr. Charles H Glatfelter noted Eisenhower's long ties to the college including his 1914 15 visit and postwar commencement speaking role plus his later trusteeship and influence on youth education.

Apple Queens Compete In Apple Harvest Queen Pageant

Fifteen Miss Apple Queen USA contenders from 14 states took part in apple picking despite rain at Arendtsville orchard. Winners named include Miss Western New York State Kymberly Bardo and Miss Michigan Rebecca Pitsch with others tied for third. The winner will be crowned tonight at the Apple Harvest Ball at the Sheraton Inn.

National DAR Schools Highlighted at Schmucker Hall

The Duncan Smith and Tamassee DAR Schools were discussed by Eva Jane Schwartz at Schmucker Hall. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution operates five other schools for underprivileged children. Kate Duncan Smith DAR School opened in 1992 on Gunners Mountain near Grant Alabama.

Adams County Democrats Dinner Set at Gettysburg Sheraton

The Adams County Democratic Committee will hold its annual fundraising dinner Thursday October 19 at 7 30 pm at the Gettysburg Sheraton Inn. Gettysburg College Extends Outreach to Lutheran Synods

Gettysburg College chaplains will coordinate an outreach program for congregations in the Maryland and Central Pennsylvania Synods of the Lutheran Church in America. Under director Dr David Crowner, 18 programs across short courses workshops seminars and presentations will be offered at parishes or campus.

May Cancel Halloween Parade Here

The 1978 Halloween Parade may be canceled unless about $2,000 is raised by Oct. 31. Parade chairman Steve Niebler says coin containers in 50 Gettysburg area businesses hold only about $5 each, with about 2,000 marchers last year. Donations may be sent to Box 5 Gettysburg 8.

David Simpson Named Executive Director at Adams-Hanover Workshop

David E. Simpson of Gettysburg R. G. was named executive director of the Adams-Hanover Area Sheltered Workshop. He succeeds Richard V. Emerson who becomes work development manager under a one year grant from the Pennsylvania Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation to secure more subcontract work and develop new products for state federal use programs. Emerson, a 1952 LaSalle College graduate, led the workshop since 1959 and will focus on higher skill manufacturing with local industry and broader marketing to the Commonwealth and federal government. Clark praised Emerson for nine years of service and said the change expands sophisticated applications.

Two York County Teens Die In West York Crash

A two vehicle collision on Rt 234 west of East Berlin killed two York County teens and injured others. The driver of the second car, Aluer, and passenger Robert Thoa both from New Oxford were hospitalized after the rear end crash that left both vehicles a total loss. Police say the other car was parked in the westbound lane for unknown reasons and the crash remains under investigation.

Social Security Benefits Paid in Adams County Start of 1978

Gilmore Smith, social security manager in Chambersburg, reports $2,036,922 in benefits for Adams County at the start of 1978. Beneficiaries include 5,875 retired workers, 605 disabled workers, 818 spouses, and 1,127 widows or dependents of deceased workers.

Grant Boosts Gettysburg College Psychology Research

The psychology department at Gettysburg College receives a 41000 grant from the National Science Foundation for a 26 month project directed by Dr Thane Pittman on motivational antecedents of attribution processes and control experience. Other faculty such as Dr Paul R D Agostino have also secured multiple grants for memory research and equipment purchases. Dr Pittman, a San Antonio native and Gettysburg faculty member since 1972, is a notable specialist in social psychology.
