Gettysburg High School forms a Blue Team of trained students to provide emergency medical aid to stricken pupils while awaiting professional care. Mary Keller 18 remains in coma after cardiac arrest in class. School Nurse Marilyn Brough and EMS student Douglas Fishel credited for rapid life saving actions.
The new Starry Athletic Field at Messiah College will be dedicated October 21 at 3 p.m. in honor of David R. Starry for a $75,000 charitable gift annuity and his interest in youth development. The project, costing over $200,000, adds playing fields, lighting, and an all weather track as part of campus upgrades to strengthen physical facilities. Starry, born near Latimore in 1886, taught a one room school at 16, later moved to New Jersey as a administrator, founded Camp Passumpsic in Ely Vermont, and remained active in civic and educational circles. He spends warm months at Cottage 120 Gettysburg Lutheran Retirement Home and winters in Boca Raton Florida. His lifelong ties include visits to Gettysburg and involvement in restoration and commemorative efforts. Starry's father enlisted in the Union Army and was a drummer born in Gettysburg.
California Michigan and West Virginia send three state apple queens to join 12 others in the Miss Apple Queen USA contest at the Apple Harvest Festival. Evane Thompson Rebecca Pisch and Lisa K Malcolm are the entrants with Thompson chosen to represent California.
Five of seven Cumberland Two Planning Commission members opposed ordinance 100 percent across the board requiring percolation tests on all lots. Supervisors reconsidered, tabling the measure to reinterpret Act 537. Vice Chairman Cluck abstained as Weikert and Waybright voted to table the ordinance.
Adams County commissioners set Friday October 27 for a public hearing on proposed uses of 336,294 in Revenue Sharing Funds for 1979. The meeting will be at the North Gettysburg Office of the Adams County National Bank at 10 30 a.m. The county assessing department reported 23¢ properties were transferred in August.

Adams County Children and Youth Services holds a public hearing on its 1979 budget of over 724600 at 7 30 p m in the American Legion building Gettysburg Baltimore Street The department plans to serve about 7200 youths next year More than half the funds go to child care and foster homes Copies of the plan are available for inspection at the county commissioners and Children and Youth Services offices.
Volunteers from the League at Women Voters and Easter Seals Society of Adams County will visit all 49 polling places on election day to assess handicap accessibility. The survey, done with the Governor’s Conference on Handicapped Individuals Implementation Committee, will guide future site designation guidelines.

Beir ut Lebanon AP reports heavy gunfire at the main crossroad between Beirut s Muslim and Christian sectors imperiling a three day old cease fire between Lebanon s Christian militias and Syrian peacekeeping troops. All roads closed as machine guns blaze and rocket propelled grenades explode. Witnesses say other crossing points faced heavy sniper fire in what reporters call the worst truce violation since it began Saturday night. Beirut s Christian radio station reported Israeli gunboats shelled Palestinian guerrilla camps in southern Lebanon during the night.
Washington reports Ian Smith tried to win U S support for Rhodesia's majority rule plan. After a two hour meeting with Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, both sides upheld opposing positions and no progress was made. State Department spokesman Hodding Carter stated there was no ground gained.
Gettysburg borough council approved increases to police and municipal employee insurance. Daily semi private room coverage rises to 90, life insurance to 5000, costing about 306 monthly. A midget football field at recreation park was endorsed in concept with a 3 acre site, stands, building and refreshment stand, estimated at 10000 and five year build. A new snowplow will cost 1995 to attach to the dump truck for alley clearance. Street trees will be trimmed at borough expense and owners warned to trim overhanging limbs within 30 days.
Locust swarms covering about 10 square miles entered Pakistan's Sind Province from India, spreading via dust storms in Khairpur and Tharparkar districts. Officials warn the swarms threaten crops and the army was deployed to assist civilian efforts to destroy them before they spread toward Afghanistan and Iran.
