Stubborn Blaze At DMI Plant On York Street

Firefighters battled a stubborn blaze in a sawdust bin at Dolly Wadison Industries off York Street on Saturday. Fire Chief Gerald White said a spark from a blower likely set smoldering sawdust, with flames scorching the bin ceiling. Crews spent hours digging through the pile and returned at 8 pm to tackle a new hotspot, reporting moderate damage to the sawdust bin.

Apple Harvest Festival Opens With Big Weekend Crowds

About 26 000 people visited the Apple Harvest Festival at South Mountain Fairgrounds over the opening weekend, with 10 000 on Saturday and 16 000 on Sunday. Foot stands sold out, chicken barbecue ended early, and shuttle buses carried attendees from nearby parking lots. The festival continues next weekend with Miss Apple Queen USA contest, apple booths, demonstrations, rides, contests, and live entertainment.

Law aims to backfill on-site sewage test holes in Pa

State Rep Kenneth J. Cole announced Governor Shapp signed a law requiring property owners to backfill sewage test holes within five days after tests conclude. The measure, HE 1824, targets hazards from open pits that claimed two Adams County children, with backfill to occur after inspections and only after official notification. The law becomes effective 69 days after the governor's signature.

Fire Prevention Program At Abbottstown Honors Area Firecrews

About 306 people and 19 Adams Coins and neighboring fire companies attended Abbottstown’s annual Fire Prevention program on Sunday. Adams County Fire Chiefs and Adams County Volunteer Firemen Association sponsored the event with contests in car rescue, ladder truck, snarkle exhibition, knock-up, bucket brigade, and participation trophies awarded to all attending departments.
