Shapp urges end to attitudinal barriers for disabled in Pa

Governor Milton Shapp addressed the Governors Committee on Employment of the Handicapped at Gettysburg praising progress in placing 21,356 Pennsylvanians in jobs while stressing the need to remove architectural and attitudinal barriers. He cited Vietnam veteran Thomas Lipp and applauded 1978 award-winning employers L Kent Showalter and Dr Robert E Wharen for advancing accessibility and welfare of handicapped workers.

Exchange Club To Hold Bicycle Registration

The Gettysburg Exchange Club launches a bicycle registration program at Keefauver Elementary School from 9 am to noon on October 1. The effort, run with Borough Council police and local schools, aims to prevent theft and aid recovery of lost bikes, with owner cards kept on file.

FBI arrests two in submarine theft plot to steal Trepang

FBI says two men were charged with conspiring to steal the Trepang submarine and flee with a nuclear missile attack plan. James Cosgrove is sought. Edward Mendenhall and Kurtis Schmidt face arraignment in St. Louis. The plot allegedly targeted the Atlantic, with a buyer to meet offshore.

YWCA Expands Reach with Community Programs

The Gettysburg YWCA served over 8 100 people in the year, a 13 5 percent rise supported by United Way. Programs include antiques bridge cooking photography shi ne and classes for new parents and those who are suddenly single. The building provides a public rest area on weekdays and hosts community groups.

Pleads Guilty To Drug Store Burglary

Raymond Boyd Hoffmanster of Youngstown Ohio pleaded guilty in Adams County court to a burglary charge linked to a July 7 break in at People's Drug Store Gettysburg York Street. He faces sentencing after a pre sentence investigation. Curtis Garza of Gardner Road was set for trial January 15 after a witness became available. Garza faces burglary and theft charges for allegedly entering John Blanche’s Fairfield home in June 1977.

Farmers Elect Directors and Adopt Local State Federal Policies

Adams County Farmers Association elected directors Janet Knouse Arendisville William Slagle Gettysburg R5 Ray Remecker York Springs R2 Mervin Myers Littlestown and re elected Dale King York Springs and Robert Hay Gettysburg R. The group approved 27 policies targeting local state and national issues including judges elected by popular vote and workers compensation reforms. Policies will be reviewed by the Pennsylvania Farm Policy Development committee and presented at the PFA convention November 12 in Mount Airy Lodge. They urged county water authority formation and taxed land in conservation programs. recommended limiting foreign sales of U S farm land and adjusting national debt policy. and proposed funding shifts for state police and noxious weed control. The document also calls for farm tracks exemption from Federal Highway Use Tax.

Harold Sharpe Found Dead In Gettysburg Home

Harold R Sharpe 61 was found dead in Gettysburg Adams County from a self inflicted gunshot wound in his bedroom Tuesday night. Coroner Dr Robert Lefever ruled the death and said Sharpe formerly retired from Metropolitan Edison Gettysburg after 37 years. He served in World War II and was a 1935 Linitedburg High School graduate. Survived by his mother Emma Donathen Sharpe York a brother John York a stepbrother Gomer Chambersburg St Gettysburg two stepsisters Mrs Margaret Strickhouser Gettysburg and Mrs Bernice Gamble Chambersburg and many nieces and nephews. Conewago Valley School Superintendents Given Five-Year Contracts

Conewago Valley School board authorized five year contracts for Supt Clea Wildasma and Assistant Supt Lewis Hilliard with effective dates in August 1979. A McSherrys town secretary requested reimbursement for crossing guards and the Ways and Means committee will review. District also seeks substitute teachers in several subjects and hired staff include Brenda Shaffer and John Spangler among others.
