Santa and pilot Jeff Dull survived a dramatic descent from 2600 feet when opposing winds forced a balloon to deflate after brushing tree tops near Cashtown. The craft plunged about 400 feet per second, tearing through branches before landing in a tree roughly 50 feet up, as Ed Garwalt’s odd visit plans ended in a near miss.

Three Huri In Car Skid Crash Near Aspers
Three people were taken to Warner Hospital after a two vehicle crash one mile north of Aspers at 11 a.m. Wayne L. Miller and his wife Betty 35 and daughter Michelle 1 were treated and released. Harry Kuhn Gardners R2 skidded on snow and struck Miller’s Ford and Kuhn’s 1977 jeep. Aspers Fire Co. and Pennsylvania State Police investigated.

Vandals Damage Berwick and Abbottstown Areas
Vandals caused extensive damage in Berwick Township and Abbottstown on Sunday. Six mailboxes were damaged on High Rock Road and Seaver Creek Road in Berwick Two. Nine grave markers were damaged at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Abbottstown and eight ice cream containers were stolen. Police estimate total damage at 4,900 dollars.

Tastee Freez Robbery by Young Woman at York Street Store
An 18 to 25 year old white female armed with a pistol robbed Tastee Freez at 36 York St. at 7 50 p m Saturday taking $121 from the register while J Michael Plitt stood at the counter. She fled around the building, described as 5 ft 3 in, 110 115 pounds with blonde hair, wearing a gray sweater and blue ski hat. Police are continuing the investigation.

Fire kills 10 at Rochester Holiday Inn during holiday shoppers
A blaze at a suburban Rochester Holiday Inn killed ten people and injured twenty four as up to three busloads of Canadian shoppers and wedding and dancing party guests filled the hotel. Firefighters contained the flames and aided by dogs and a crane, while arson investigators began inquiries and the scene was searched room by room.
