Gettsyburg Area Recreation Board Monday night recommended two persons for approval to join another already recommended to fill three vacancies on the board. Elizabeth Daniels and Barbara Wickerham were named for full terms, replacing Lois Bowers and Julius Swope. Barbara Kerham was named for an unexpired term through September 1982.
The Gettysburg Ministerium hosts a 9 a.m. Thanksgiving service at the Church of the Abiding Presence on the Lutheran Seminary Campus. Trinity United Church of Christ conducts the service with Rev. Roy D. Fauth preaching brief interpretations in three parts Praise Confession Dedication. The Trinity Senior Choir and organist Alice M. Snyder perform. Ushers include Mrs Emme Forrr Mrs Ann Weifert Robert P.Snyder and Kenneth Hull. Offering aids humanitarian efforts in Gettysburg Community Parking is available on Confederate Avenue for handicapped only.
Bermudian Springs officials at the elementary school listen to complaints and suggestions from the public Monday night. Only about one person attended the twice yearly session, leaving board president Fred Ebersole perturbed. Superintendent Dr. W Reese Lichtel quipped the district is the only one in the county to hold such sessions.
Two Carlisle area residents, William Hockley and his brother Robert, were injured when their truck was demolished by a jackknifing 1973 Diamond tractor trailer driven by Harold Sanders. The crash on Route 4 near York Springs occurred as Sanders attempted to avoid a stopped car, causing the rig to skid and strike the Hockleys’ vehicle, pushing it into a dirt embankment. Both Hockleys were listed in satisfactory condition at Carlisle Hospital. Sanders was not injured. Moderate damage was caused to a second vehicle at nearby intersection. no injuries reported. A separate crash near York Springs left Alice Walmer and Kenneth Collins with property damage but no injuries.
Fairfield Area School Directors voted to drop art and music facility construction from the plan and authorize Noelker and Hull to proceed with the original design, including a 750 square foot physical education complex. They considered two options, discussed costs and taxes, and formed a sex education committee to study a program, noting state reimbursement uncertainties and district regulation questions.
U S Defense Department plans to deploy about 200 troops to Guyana with 24 identification experts to recover 409 bodies from the Jonestown settlement. Helicopters will aid transport as Guyanese authorities relax death act rules. recoveries include Jim Jones and his wife among the victims.
Dr. Jakko Virtanen of Finland addressed the Gettysburg Rotary Club at the YWCA on the Finnish forestry industry. He said forests cover about 73 percent of Finland and rank third largest in Europe with over 22 million acres, mostly privately owned by farmers who rely on forestry for income. He noted Finland’s forest use supports rural life and plans to discuss helicopter forestry control during his visit.
Adams County Children and Youth Services seeks donations for a December 9 Christmas Party at Gettysburg College Union Building. About 6 children need gifts. public help requested via Adams County Children Services 123 Baltimore St Gettysburg or by calling 33 6731.
Kenneth J. Cole gained his net lead to 13 votes by about 10 30 a m in the List state House recount as workers faced 10 more districts. Two districts in Mt Pleasant were counted and Littlestown first ward saw a 30 vote swing. The pace quickened but could extend into Wednesday with a 3 p m stopping time in place.
Michael F Gorman 26 of New Oxford was fined and ordered to repay 1620 in TRA benefits after unemployment compensation fraud. He kept work at Round Hill Foods and Capital Products during eight weeks while collecting benefits and quit those jobs without notice. Hanover District Justice Sponseller imposed the fine and suspended jail with repayment, under PA law.
The Unification Church and Richard A. Fraser sue Gettysburg Borough in Harrisburg, alleging denial of free speech and religious rights to solicit contributions. They seek a temporary injunction to overturn a ban on permits, claiming March 27 1977 borough officials refused licenses citing past problems. Mayor Lightner and Chief Cluck defended actions and records.
Adams County Housing Authority invites preliminary applications for the Section 8 Existing HAP program at Lincoln Square Building Gettysburg. Gustafson said the current family quota is not yet filled and eligible renters within income limits may qualify. Singles may be waitlisted for future processing.
Littlestown School Board weighs exempting college students from taxes after Mrs. Bobbi Single urged policy change, arguing full time student status should shield working students. Members debated eligibility thresholds and ages, with Dr. Moyer noting many inquiries and the need to avoid broad exceptions. Board agreed to keep current tax rules to prevent handling complexities. Also reviewed baseball backstop renovation plans and possible rebuilding.
