Colombia volcano mudslide may have killed thousands
Survivors crawled through ash and mud as Nevado del Ruiz eruption and Lagunilla River flood devastated Armero and surrounding towns. Officials warned death toll could reach tens of thousands with 15,000 to 28,000 feared dead in Armero region and thousands more in Chinchina area. Civil defense and Red Cross rushed rescue, hospitals were set up in Lerda and Manguta, and aid from Mexico and the United States arrived.
