Rome AP reports a parliamentary committee on intelligence services vows a full investigation into the Masonic lodge scandal that toppled Italy’s 40th postwar government. President Erminio Pennacchini said the panel will examine the affair “in all its complexity and dark points.”
Boise AP reports a prosecutor’s remark on not shutting off the sale of a child preceded a six month prison term for an Air Force sergeant and a two year suspended sentence for his wife for attempting to sell their 7 month old daughter. Police later report other national cases involving smuggling and crime.
Harrisburg AP Capital Bakers Inc. has filed a voluntary liquidation petition in U S Bankruptcy Court and plans to sell its assets to Stroehmann a Williamsport based bakery Judge Thomas Wood signed an order allowing Stroehmann Brothers Co to manage Capital even before a sale agreement is signed the Harrisburg Evening News reported Thursday
Gettysburg College opens Kew Musselman Library Learning Resource Center this Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. Guided tours every half hour offer access to a 15 panel display titled Eisenhower In Retrospect about Dwight D. Eisenhower’s life and Gettysburg years. The wholly college owned display was organized by President Charles E. Glassick with donations toward the $5 million library. Parking will be on Lincoln Avenue near the College Union Building.
A federal court in Baltimore ruled Mount St. Marys College did not discriminate against Madeline Ritter in denying tenure in 1978. Judge Edward Northrop found Ritter was not denied due to gender, noting she was not considered a scholar. Ritter plans to appeal and pursue justice with her lawyer Dana Kahn.
Washington AP reports tentative agreement reached between striking miners and the soft coal industry on a three year contract. If ratified by 160,000 miners the walkout ending after more than two months, will move to union councils and local ballots. Key issue involved subcontracting to outside nonunion workers. Leaders Sam Church and R. Brown voiced cautious optimism amid talks.
About 15 residents gathered to oppose a First Federal Savings and Loan branch planned for West High Street and adjacent blocks. They warn rezoning to neighborhood commercial could trigger more development, traffic, noise, and displacement. bank officials cite service needs and equity in lending. A petition with 31 signatures was presented, and further public meetings are planned after the June 8 borough council session.
Adams County Court Judge Oscar F. Spicer granted a temporary injunction after an emergency hearing, barring strikers from threatening or identifying employees at Round Hill Foods in New Oxford. The order restricts communication with workers entering or leaving the plant and blocks threats to label workers as nonemployees. A Tuesday hearing will decide on a permanent injunction as negotiators from the plant and the United Food and Commercial Union failed to reach agreement amid a fifth week of walkouts by about 100 workers.
LV Valley Ranch in Carroll Valley withdrew its operating permit application after the borough council said it was not ready to grant the license. Propr proprietors Vince Tauro and Lisa Kroese will revise the filing to include omitted items and comply with environmental building and health recommendations. The council will reassess once the ranch meets authorities’ requirements. a future application may include trail routes and private land crossing permissions.
