Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel delivered the commencement address at Mount St. Marys College to a large crowd. He criticized the Watergate scandal as eroding public confidence in government, while noting no elected official was implicated. He and several leaders received honorary doctorates as 315 diplomas were awarded amid 915 total seniors.
The honors convocation during Mount Saint Marys College commencement weekend recognized two area students Emmitsburg and Littlestown for top academic awards. Francis X. Ryan won the Bishop Allen Memorial Prize and the Edward J. Flanagan Memorial Prize, while Kenneth C. Metter earned the McGraw Memorial Prize for high yearly math averages. Other awardees included Charles G. Rees for Business Administration and Michael C. Cunning for Biology with top scholastic averages in their fields.
At Emmitsburg the last commencement exercises of St Joseph College saw eleven area women receive Bachelor of Arts or Science degrees among 110 graduates. Cardinal Shehan presided, with remarks by Rt. Rev. Robert P. Kline and Sister Margaret Dougherty conferring diplomas.
The Sulphur Spa Historical Society opened a museum and information center in the old Huntington Township Election House in York Springs. Delores Hermansen led the ceremony with County Commissioner Harry F. Biesecker praising history preservation as reopening rains indoors. The event featured vintage dresses and flowers while historical items on loan included paintings and old bridges photographs. Weekend rain totals and forecast noted.
A New Jersey driver was slightly injured when his car failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with another car at S Main and W Hanover in Biglerville. The crash caused about 1000 dollars in damage. no serious injuries reported.
State police logged two of five Memorial Day weekend crashes on county roads injuring six people. Hanover teens Vickie Bortner and Ethel Bollinger endured fractures and scalp injuries in a Route 194 collision near Zoller's fruit stand. Other occupants, Faye Reed Debra Trestle and Tony Crabill, received lesser injuries. Reed failed to stop when Crabill slowed for a left turn. Damages were estimated at 1700 dollars. William Lee Myers of Hanover was treated for additional injuries at the hospital.

Named patients include Mrs Michael Law Homer Bobo Ruth Bowers Ira Walter Richard Danko Mrs Ronald Martin Eugene Johnson Jr and others with discharge entries for John Baker Irving Bengal Mrs Robert Bergey Melissa Martin Jane Ould and more.
At the 165th Mount Saint Mary’s College commencement Sunday afternoon in the college gymnasium, four honorary degree recipients and several officials pose for a Times photo. Participants include Dr. John C. Rose, dean of Georgetown University of Medicine. Most Rev. Michael J. Begley, bishop of Charlotte. Bishop Edward J. Herrmann, chair of the board of trustees. Dr. John J. Dillon, college president. Sister Margaret Dougherty, D.C., president of St. Joseph College. and Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel, the commencement speaker.
Dr. Charles Glatfelter, Gettysburg College professor, spoke at Great Conewago Presbyterian Church cemetery memorial services in Hunterstown. He urged remembering relatives and friends who shaped our lives, noting Memorial Day as a time to reflect, honor, and recall shared human experiences across wars.
The toll rose to 360 as the Memorial Day three day weekend ended. High winds and rain across many roads created hazardous travel as motorists began to head home.
A 22-year-old Soviet pilot defected after crash landing near Klein Schoppenstedt West Germany. He parachuted from his SU jet and requested asylum while being questioned. The Soviet Embassy was informed. no official confirmation yet. An East German soldier also sought asylum at the Brunswick border.
Memorial Day services at Wenksville Methodist Church were led by Rev. Dr. Edgar D. Ziegler with Rev. Kenneth Bonham and Rev. Jerome V. Gus among speakers. Rain canceled cemetery ceremonies after the church program, which included the New Oxford High School Band and readings of the Gettysburg Address.
Mr and Mrs Jerry Chandler announce the birth of a daughter in Littlestown R J on Saturday at Hanover Hospital. Mr and Mrs Donald Kraft announce a daughter in York Springs R J on Friday. Mr and Mrs Ross H Miner announce a son in New Oxford on Friday.
Firemen from Midway responded to an 8 20 p m blaze under a trailer at the Anchor Inn rear Saturday evening. Details were not available this morning.
Wayne L. Stump 17 Dover 2 was listed in satisfactory condition at York Hospital today with a fractured right leg from a motorcycle automobile collision Saturday on Paradise Road near his home. Northern Regional Police said Stump's eastbound motorcycle skidded on a curve and hit an oncoming car driven by David Klingan 16 of McSherrystown. Police added the crash caused only minor damages to both vehicles. Klingan suffered minor inhalation but did not seek treatment.
Chester Shriver former national commander of the Sons of Union Veterans spoke at the GAR memorial rites in the GAR home detailing religious patriotic and personal significance of Memorial Day. He urged a return to May 30 for Decoration Day and noted moves to align Armistice Day with November 11. The ceremony featured DR Riley Parry Snyder Warman Myers and Mrs Dora Mae Pyles with Myers providing the drum roll.
Reverend Charles Kel Jer of Fayetteville United Methodist Church spoke at the annual Memorial Day ceremony in Bendersville, moved indoors to Bethlehem Lutheran Church due to rain. He urged honoring fallen veterans and denounced drug peddlers, crooks, and other dishonorable figures.
The Adams County Association of Fire Chiefs will hold its annual outdoor meeting at 8 Friday evening at the Taneytown firehall, according to secretary Eugene Murren of McSherrystown.
Memorial Day services were mostly canceled due to weekend rain. A small military parade was planned for Baltimore Street with five hundred National Guardsmen and 100 Army Reservists, meeting the Marine Band from Quantico at High and Baltimore Streets before wreaths and a volley at the National Cemetery. Chester Shriver announced the parade and cemetery service canceled for safety, but a military procession was kept as weather allowed.
Robert Mear Norman 24 of McLean Virginia was arrested by state police at 2 30 Sunday morning after allegedly breaking into Mrs Margar et Strayer s home near East Cavalry Field. He was jailed on malicious mischief and unlawful entry charges after failing to post 1000 bail. Police say Norman claimed he sought police help after a Civil War reenactment injury and used the Strayer home to call for aid. The Acorn Club announces a meeting Wednesday at 7 with Miss Mary Hartman.
