Abbottstown extends completion of water project

Abbottstown Borough Council granted a time extension to H. J. Iliams Company for finishing the water system project originally due May 22. Project tasks include springs rehabilitation, reservoir lining, silt removal, and extending the catwalk with 10 percent service connections and 15 percent new laterals yet to install.

Gettysburg Adopts Innovative Gifted Student Program

Gettysburg launches a staged gifted program next fall after 27 district elementary teachers completed in service training led by Jack Cassidy. Cassidy, a Millersville State College professor, outlined historical shifts in gifted education and the six areas defined by the US Office of Education, noting Pennsylvania's IQ threshold of 130 for gifted placement.

Gettysburg 15th Annual Outdoor Antiques Show Opens Saturday

The Gettysburg Outdoor Antiques Show launches Saturday with 180 merchants from 14 states in four streets around Lincoln Square York Carlisle Chambersburg and Baltimore Streets. Wayne Schultz says proceeds stay in the community supporting Christmas decorations after a warehouse fire damaged the town. Hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine.

Farmers pursue agricultural district in township

Hamiltonian farmers led by Guy Donaldson push to form an agricultural district covering 4592 acres of farm and timberland between Jack's Mountain road and Orrtanna. The board will publish notices for 30 days and form a five member Agricultural Advisory Committee to review and advise, under the 1981 Agricultural Security Act.

Tax grievement trial tests amusement tax at The Retreat

Adams County Court heard testimony in a civil suit by Gettysburg Borough and Gettysburg Area School District against The Retreat seeking back amusement taxes. Judge Oscar Spicer ordered the proceedings to a findings of fact stage with June 25 argument set, after reviewing licensing fees and partial payments dating to 1979.

Mount Joy Township appeals junkyard ruling to Commonwealth Court

Junkyard regulations in Mount Joy Township were invalidated by Adams County Court. Judge Oscar F. Spicer ruled the 1980 ordinance could be enacted only with zoning safeguards, which the township lacks. An appeal to the Commonwealth Court was filed by solicitor Samuel E Teeter.

Community pressure prompts shop closure on Carlisle Street

The Concerned Parents group pressured Gettysburg officials to curb drug paraphernalia sales. Wizard of Ahs owner David Smith announced a June 19 closure after slipping business, planning a going out of business sale and possible sale of the store. The council expressed concern about drugs and pledged to help, while noting enforcement limits on paraphernalia laws.
