Area lad joins Aussie fire brigade as honorary member
Six year old Joseph Burkell of Gettysburg wore a Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade uniform during a half hour ceremony at the National Fire Academy near Gettysburg. He became one of four American boys granted honorary membership amid the brigade centenary celebrations and U.S. tour activities with other youngsters in Baltimore and California. The event marked the 100th anniversary of the Melbourne brigade, formed after the 1891 Great Block Fire, now employing 1,800 firefighters and 450 support staff serving 2.5 million people.
