Kuwait reports a 34 percent rise in its surplus petrodollars, per capita wealth now the highest globally, with the surplus growing from 48.6 billion dollars in 1979 to 65.1 billion in 1980, per a government document to Parliament.
In Philadelphia John Mitchell and his wife Hazel shot 24 year old Michael Congo who was attempting to rob them. Congo died at the scene after leaping from bushes and pointing a handgun while the couple returned home from work around 5 30 am. Police report the assailant yelled freeze as he threatened them.
Magistrate and police report a dramatic crime uptick in Adams County led by Gettysburg Borough. Chief Ronald F Wells cites theft fraud liquor violations drug abuse and vandalism as the top rising offenses. First quarter 1981 crime in Gettysburg up 65 percent from 1980 with larceny theft remaining the largest total countywide per the recent UCR.
Adams County voters will choose candidates for county treasurer sheriff and clerk of courts and district justice posts. They will also pick for seven seats on state appeals courts and numerous municipal posts while a refer endum on paper versus punch card voting may appear. The slate features incumbents and challengers across Republican and Democratic parties with contests for auditor assessor school board and election inspectors. write ins appear where needed.
Two Carnegie Mellon computer experts warned the Votomatic punch card system could be tampered with and prone to human error affecting election returns. Adams County officials defended automatic voting as less error prone than paper ballots. The reports, prepared last November, were conducted for the state Election Bureau and reviewed by a panel before Pennsylvania approved the system.
The Fairfield Area Schools host dedication ceremonies for a new physical education facility during the Annual Spring Exhibit from 7 to 9 p.m. Superintendent Samuel R. McHenry Jr. will present the building to board president Delmar Richardson, who will present it to the community. A memorial tree will be planted at 7:30 p.m. in memory of Gregory West, with class president Jeffery Poulson presiding.
Thomas Kallas and Delores Hine of Reating wed at the Am phitheatre on the Battlefield during the Retread Motor cycle Club 10th anniversary visit to Gettysburg PA. The ceremony followed a Retread rally where the couple met in 1978 in the Pocono Mountains. More than 250 members from 12 states and Canada attended the anniversary dinner and parade with a 10 year pin awarded to each member. The Rev James Tipton officiated and vows were renewed by club members.
