Gettysburg College grads hear Nobel Peace laureate call for change
Betty Williams, Nobel Peace Prize winner and peace activist, addressed 450 graduates at Gettysburg College on Mothers Day urging individuals to make a difference for world peace. Williams, a cofounder of Peace People, shared vivid memories from Northern Ireland and stressed governments fail to consult children in war. Also at the commencement, Dr. J Michael Bishop, a 1957 alum and Nobel Prize in Medicine co-winner, spoke of the college’s lasting impact on his career and the promise it holds for graduates.

Taneytown fire kills 33 year old, injures sister
A two alarm blaze at a second floor Taneytown apartment on East Baltimore Street left 33 year old Jerry McDaniels dead from smoke inhalation. His 9 year old sister Jennifer was in critical condition at University of Maryland Shock Trauma. Firefighters faced intense heat and smoke as they fought the blaze for about three hours. The cause is under investigation by Maryland fire marshal Frank Reudhantie. The building suffered about 50 000 dollars in damage and several residents were displaced with Red Cross aid on scene.
