Black times staff writer Betty Williams a peace activist from War torn Northern Ireland and one of two Nobel prize winners at the 155th Gettysburg College commencement exercises sunday told the graduates in a sometimes tearful voice that individually they can make a difference to bring peace to the world. Black times staff writer a 3-year-old Taneytown md., boy died from smoke inhalation sunday afternoon while his sister received critical injuries after a two alarm fire broke out in a second floor apartment across the Street from the Taneytown fire co. Taneytown fire chief Jim Salley said that firefighters battling the Blaze at the apartment building on East Baltimore Street found Jerry Mcdaniels dead in his second floor apartment shortly after the fire erupted at . The boy s sister 9-year-old Jen Nifer Mcdaniels was transported to the University of Maryland hos Pital Shock trauma unit where she was listed in critical condition Sun Day night suffering from smoke inhalation. Chief Salley said that there have been conflicting reports about exactly where the parents of the two children were when the fire broke out. He said that they were not in the apartment when the children were found. The fire marshal is also investigating that aspect of the i Vestiga chief Salley said. An unidentified Taneytown fire fighter received minor injuries while fighting the Blaze. Chief Salley said that the cause of the fire was not known and is be ing investigated by Maryland fire marshal prank Rauschenburg. The building sustained approximately damage. Because of the intense heat of the shooting flames in front of the building firefighters had to gain Access in the rear of the building to begin to tackle the Blaze. The building was divided into eight to 10 apartments and chief Salley said that residents living in at least six of apartments mostly on the first floor were Able to move Back into them sunday night. He said that he was not sure How Many people were without shelter sunday but he said that american red Cross personnel were on the scene. Chief Salley said that fire officials investigating the Blaze believe it began in a second floor apart ment in the front of the building right next to the apartment where the children were found. The chief said that it took his fire company about three minutes to re Spond to the scene which was right across the Street from the fire com Pany and that he could see huge flames shooting out of the windows of the Corner second floor apartment. I Don t know How it got out of control so fast in such a Short period of chief Salley said. Much of the second floor was full of dark Black smoke when firefighters from at least 10 Maryland and Pennsylvania fire companies arrived on the scene. Three fire companies from Adams county were on the scene. He said that the second floor sustained most of the damage from the Blaze while the first floor sustained minor water and heat damage. I love this Community that is Why the been Here for 30 years. This is a very old historic Community with Many colonial artefacts that the people diligently preserve. The people who live on the mount have a deep Pride in their land. They Are very Friendly and hard working and they have deep roots Here that go Back for Many her Job Well i m a retired social worker and educator and i now have Only one Job to get pennsylvanians to see the value of Strawberry Hill nature Center and to enlist their Aid in preserving it for future generations. There Are Over 500 protected acres Here where students teachers environmental groups and the Community can learn about nature and How to protect and preserve at the table of my favorite would be broiled Lamb chops fresh asparagus new potatoes and a Cherry pie or Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. Sunny Ray s in Fairfield has an excellent bakery and their Black Cherry pie is my favorite. And i love All the fresh fruit that grows right Here in Adams pet peeves people who Don t listen when you re talking to them. They Are already thinking about what they want to say. Has that Ever happened to her family i did t get married until i was old. My late husband Hans was 71 when we married. He was a widower and my former Boss. We shared the same philosophy of life. He died at 85, and he was very Active until his death in spite of cancer of the Larynx and lung. My 14 years with Hans were the happiest years of my life. I still miss him but he s around Here because this place was his vision. I m trying to carry on his dream and i see him All around me in the Beauty of this place. I have step children grand and great grandchildren and i still see a lot of them. And i have two Brothers in Baltimore and nieces and nephews that Are like children to in her spare time to an avid Reader particularly of historical novels and am a real history student. I am fascinated by the local history of it. Hope. My husband collected rare books and i enjoy giving them to people who truly appreciate them. I used to be quite an athlete and loved to swim play Tennis and Golf. I taught my husband How to play Golf when he was 71. He said this is much better exercise for me than so we went to a local Golf course every Day. Now i do a lot of walking because i love to show visitors around our nature walks. Being physically and mentally Active keeps me surprisingly i have always been a very shy person who has been forced into the Public Eye in my attempt to carry out the dream of my husband. I now have the reputation of being an outspoken character but am still painfully shy. I just take a deep breath and begin speaking and soon i forget to feel with a magic Wand i would give people everywhere the realization of the vital importance of their vote. People need to Stop thinking in terms of they and what Are doing and to begin thinking in terms of we and what we can accomplish with knowledge and group for the future i want to give people the tools for proper planning to protect their future so they won t have to live in developments with no Trees with highways coming up to their doors breathing air that makes them sick and seeing Many animals become extinct. I will be Busy until i die. I have a certain Mission to influence people to understand their own people Power. I envision a professional Community Organiza Tion to help people accomplish what they want to do. My own successes and defeats have Given me something to pass on to five minutes with Jesus Christ to talk with him about the Way his philosophy has been carried out and what Man has done with his teachings Over the last years. My questions would be endless and Many of them would Center on what we have done to god s creation. Trying to carry out my christianity led me to a life of social work. I believe that god is love and i am still trying to carry that philosophy on starting Over i would like to have known How to do things in a More educated manner. Knowing the things i have done badly i would like to go Back and work them out differently. I have Learned that it takes two to make a situation and i try to learn More about my part in creating unhappy situations in the favorite music Well that s a tragedy i m completely tone deaf. I can dance because i like Rny nym and recently five gotten into opera and have Learned through watching Public to that i can appreciate opera even though i Don t understand the music. But i cant Tell the difference in tones which is a great loss in my life. I took piano lessons for three years As a child and got away with it by memorizing everything. Then i played for a school Assembly got scared and my memory left me. That was the end of my musical by Beth Baker coms Pondant
