Couple funds Saint Francis swim lessons in Gettysburg

Third grade pupils at St Francis Xavier School Gettysburg are learning to swim at the YWCA Recreation Center funded by an area couple who requested anonymity. The program runs through May 21 with 28 students enrolled as school board officials note not all districts can cover parochial students. Gettysburg Area School District officials previously declined to provide lessons citing lack of authority to fund parochial programs.

County unemployment dips in March amid national spike

March saw Adams County unemployment fall from 12.9 to 11.4 percent while York Adams areas posted smaller gains. Pennsylvania statewide rate slipped to 10.6 percent as national joblessness rose to 9.0 percent. Manufacturing led York area layoffs at 52 percent, with women making up 34.3 percent of unemployed.
