Government soldiers launched a methodical four sweep in the hills 12 miles north of San Salvador. Col. Rafael Flores Lima warned a full assault could clear guerrillas within 24 hours but at the risk of harming many innocent people.
Police said a special weapons unit ended a standoff at a boarding house after a street fight escalated. One man was shot and died. another man was arrested as authorities described the confrontation beginning Tuesday.
The Harrisburg AP report says the House vetoed a bill to fund state agencies with more than $52 million in added amendments by the Senate. The initial $340,000 for the reapportionment commission grew with items such as $42 million for welfare grants and other allocations. If no second vote occurs, a House-Senate conference committee will decide.
