The Gettysburg joint school system plans a tentative budget of 287 115 10 for 1949 50. The executive committee met at the high school to discuss anticipated changes in state aid and postponed adoption until June 13.
Justice of the Peace Robert P Snyder sent William Surratt of Baltimore to trial on a charge of making a bad pass. The State Police Gettysburg substation filed the charge.
Col William G Weaver of Baltimore street was elected Rotary club president for the coming year. Officers chosen include vice president Dr Kenneth Smoke secretary Dr Frederick Tilberg and treasurer Calvin Shank with Tilberg and Shank retaining their posts. A Rotary speaker cited fires costs in Adams County noting 160 to 180 fires annually and a yearly property loss of about 1 billion dollars with one death every 50 minutes.
Hanover resident H V Forster commercial manager and part owner of a local radio station spoke to Gettysburg Lions at Mt Joy Lutheran church. He cited Fortune survey data on radio as favorite leisure activity and noted growing radio advertising as retailers buy most airtime.
The body of Private Robert E. Staub of New Oxford R1, killed in action on November 16, 1944, is among 5328 American WWII war dead returning from Europe aboard the Haiti Victory. Staub, who served since July 1, 1941 after working for D B Winebrenner in Hanover, was trained at Camp Forrest and stationed in Fort Wayne before serving in England and France. He left behind his father and siblings, plus two sisters.
Maxwell Shivery of Juniata County pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the September crash five miles south of New Bloomfield that killed Harrisburg sportswriter Richard C. Walton and two others. He received 9 to 18 months in prison and a $200 fine, with the judge noting the plea spared the cost of a jury trial and allowed a lighter sentence since only one death could be considered. A $50,000 civil suit was filed for Mrs. Helen G. Wal by attorneys Nissley and Morrow shortly after the sentence.

The Gettysburg college choir will present a 13 selection sacred program in the Forum Harrinsburg at 3 PM Sunday closing its 1948 49 tour. In its 14th year the choir is regarded as an outstanding eastern choral group and has given 27 concerts in Pennsylvania New York and Maryland since February 20 in Chambersburg.
The 22nd district meeting will be held Wednesday evening in the Greencastle High School auditorium. Gettysburg attendees include Wilbur A. Geiselman district commander and Paul A. Fox district adjutant.
Stuart H. Smith of the Middle District Fire Underwriters praised Gettysburg Fire Department equipment after an inspection at the engine house Monday night. He commended the fire marshal and pledged cooperation on fire prevention, stressing trained crews and awareness to reduce losses.
Gilbert Little, 29, of Norfolk Virginia, wanted on a grand larceny charge, was arrested Monday by Sheriff Dorsey J Schultz with State police assistance and jailed in Adams County. Norfolk police plan to transport him back to Norfolk. Little was employed on the new Lincoln highway west of Gettysburg.
More than 600 attendees packed St. Aloysius hall for the Gettysburg Times Littlestown cooking school. Mrs Mergeret Cherly-Smith demonstrated new methods and recipes with Miss Martha Strausbaugh assisting.
At the YWCA board meeting a Gettysburg woman donating a £106 series G U. & Treasury bond, kept anonymous, was announced for the permanent endowment fund. President Mrs. Guyon E. Buehier led 12 members as devotions were by Mrs. Kee fauver.
The joint school board executive committee approves the 1949 50 calendar with open sessions September 7 and a close date of June 4 1950. Notable dates include September 6 teachers institute and September 14 National Anthem day. September 17 marks Constitution day at the high school.
Miss Barbara Cochran chosen May Queen by St. Aloysius women after evening services. May Day crown event at St. Aloysius Church on Sunday May 23 at 7 p.m. Mary Riva Riley crown bearer and Vivian Sneeringer reader for consecration. All local young ladies eligible to join in gowns of tolled purple hues. Monsignor Tighe to preside.
The Gettysburg Times-Lit tlestown cooking school in St Aloysius hall invites all to a free closing session with prizes. Doors open 6:30 PM and demonstration begins 7:30 PM. Prizes include 25 stand items valued at hundreds and $150 in groceries. Mrs. Margaret Coverly Smith will prepare dishes on stage.
A hit and run hearing is scheduled with Justice of the Peace John H. Basch presiding. Defendant R. J. Carter is charged with striking Steihowr’s car at South Washington and Breebridge. The case involves a $500 bond and a February hearing date.
Mr and Mrs John Shilleman of Gardners announce the birth of a daughter at Carlist hospital Sunday. Attorney and Mrs Edward B Bullet of 157 East Middle Street announce the birth of a son at Warner hospital morning.
Gettysburg airport hosted an unscheduled air show drawing private pilots from Bloomsburg and Pittsburgh. About 14 airplanes with 40 people landed on Sunday then 17 more planes arrived, all aiming to view the battlefield. Airport staff welcomed the crowd and urged more private pilot groups to visit.
Harry E. Brown of Fairfield was re elected president of the Adams County Agricultural Extension association at a board meeting in the extension office at the courthouse. Other officers John B. Peters Howard B. Way Quintin D. Reber and Mary Jane Mickey reported on home economics activities with 17 adult groups active in winter work such as clothing construction hair cutting and household care.
The Gettysburg Country Club greens were praised Monday afternoon and at the May meeting of the Pennsylvania Greenskeepers Association held at the country club and the Hotel Gettysburg. Members expressed amazement at the speed with which the course was maintained.
The Commonwealth has no current plans to construct a by pass highway around Gettysburg. State Senator Donald P. McPherson and Republican County Chairman John H. Basehore reported after meeting in Harrisburg with Ray F. Smock, secretary of highways. They said Smock assured there are no present plans, though future administrations could change that.
Twenty one new members were inducted into the Auxiliary of the Albert J. Lentz post of the American Legion during a regular meeting at the post home on Baltimore Street. President Mrs Erle Deardorff led the initiation with aid from officers. A Mother's Day program followed under Mrs Howard Hartzell music chairman. Gifts were given to the oldest mother present Mrs John McDonnell and to the two mothers with the most daughters, Mrs Raymond Fridinger and Mrs Clarence Sprigg. A June 2 meeting was announced. The musical program featured trumpet solos Morning and My.
Adams County Girl Scouting board met Monday at the Little House on Hast High Street. Budget progress shows $303.10 from York Springs area toward a yearly budget of 83 740. last year a $4 740 budget was reported with $2 624.38 on hand as of May 9. There are 113 Brownies, 264 Intermediate, and 69 Senior scouts. three Senior troops unregistered. Districts form four boards with area chairmen. Memorial Day parades are planned and court of awards postponed until fall.
A rummage sale will be held Saturday in the Leatherman room at Center Square by the Gettysburg Woman’s Club to raise funds for a fund drive. Members are urged to bring clothing donations Friday afternoon to the Leatherman room. chairmen include Mrs. Charles Pitzer and a committee of 14 other named club members.
Dr. D L Biemesderfer of Millersville State Teachers College will speak at Gettysburg high school’s baccalaureate in the Majestic theater on June 3. Superintendent Dr Lloyd C Keefauver announced during an executive committee meeting at Gettysburg high school. The district educates 1806 pupils, with 1567 from Gettysburg Cumberland Freedom Hendland and 239 non residents from Fairfield joint system. A partition will create a new seventh grade room at Lincoln school avoiding reopening a robin school. Joint treasury balance is 11799.49 as of May 6. last month’s expenditures totaled 19632.41 and cafeteria income was 958.42.
Adams county teachers will attend an elementary history workshop at Arendtsville from August 8 to 19. The session, organized by the county elementary principals association, ties into next year Sesqui Centennnial plans and explores a new local history emphasis in the elementary curriculum.
Edward A Heintzelman 73 of Gettysburg R 2 died at home Monday after ill health since January. A former blacksmith along the Gettysburg Fairfield road he leaves six children, a brother, two sisters and three grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm from Allison Funeral Home Fairfield with Rev Norman S Wolf officiating. Interment Fairfield Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 pm.
Dr C G Crist coroner announced an inquest at the court house on Thursday afternoon into the death of Charles W Bagot aged 54 of 494 South Washington street. He died at Warner hospital on May 3 after being struck by an automobile at South Washington and West Middle streets on March 27.
