Thirteen members of a government patrol died when communist guerrillas ambushed them in the southern Philippines. Three others were wounded as authorities pursued the militants, police said.
Federal officials have relocated all but about 2,000 of the 25,000 Cuban refugees brought to Fort Chaffee since May 1980. As of Sunday there were 2,118 Cubans on base with about 200 relocated in the past week, and experts warn the number could drop below 2,000 this week if current rates continue.

Washington hosts U S Israel and Egypt military officers to shape a multinational Sinai peacekeeping force outside United Nations auspices under Camp David. U S takes lead after Soviet opposition to UN sponsorship. Discussions cover force composition and anticipated U S share of the 2500 personnel. Political talks between the three nations to follow in Giza later this month.
Officials estimate more than 12 000 attended over the two day Apple Blossom Festival at the South Mountain Fairgrounds. Highlights included machinery displays, a petting zoo, helicopter rides, antique cars, sheep shearing, shawl making, orchard tours and the crowning of Angie Sheaffer as queen during April 11 contests amid crowd excitement. Congressman Goodling attended to crown the new queen.
Miss Shaeffer was crowned Apple Blossom Queen by Congressman Goodling after a robe presentation by Miss Lobaugh. She attends South Seminary Junior College in Virginia this fall. Pie winners ranged from Julie Taylor to Karen Bretzman with 28 pies and an auction raising funds. Judges were Glenn Wolf Joanne Musselman and Shirley Claar. Festival partners included Adams County Fruit Growers, Poultry Association, and Gettysburg Travel Council. The event marked the first two day festival with plans to continue.
Latimore Township voters head to the polls as five supervisor seats attract Republican candidates. John L. Hinkle seeks a six-year term while Michael D. Juliana vies for the same seat amid debates on sewage capacity, development, police protection, taxes, and roads. Hinkle warns on rising water use and stricter sewer rules, noting courts are a last resort. Juliana calls sewage enforcement a growing-up pain tied to growth and new regulations.
Inland Tide, a 30 page poetry collection by John Clarke of Stone Jug Road in Big Lerville R I. Clarke, 53, a Gettysburg College English professor since 1966, has poems ranging from four lines to 34 lines and previously appeared in journals such as The Colorado Quarterly Epoch Kansas Quarterly Massachusetts Review Midwest Quarterly New Mexico Quarterly Sam Houston Literary Review Saturday Review The Texas Review The New Yorker and Tar River Poetry. He also translated Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, now awaiting publication by a major U S house.
Two Latimore Republicans vie for the unexpired two year term. George A. Anderson, retired school director and East Berlin hay business owner, stresses road priority and tax efficiency. Robert L. Duncan, planning commission member and construction supervisor, calls for a road building program with a budgeted paving percentage to ease future tax burdens and supports farmland preservation.
Fairfield area man Art Snyder builds a four pounder cannon with a range over a mile using black powder. At Fort Loudon, Snyder and Don Valentine demonstrated the cannon and original Brown Bess rifles to 400 to 450 Boy Scouts in authentic period dress. A full crew of 12 is normal, but one man can load and fire solo. the event showcased blasting, loading steps, and historical costumes.
