More than 39 Littlestown area taxpayers attended a public meeting at St. Aloysius social hall to aid efforts to end the six day teacher strike. They called for a Friday night session with the nine member school board and nine striking teachers to hear facts and reasons for stalled negotiations.
Warner Hospital will join more than 7,000 U S hospitals in National Hospital Week May 6 to 12 1973. The theme Your Hospital A Caring Community Your Health Our Common Concern reflects staff commitment to improving health care efficiency and access for the public. James E Bangerd administrator notes the week spotlights how hospital workers meet evolving American health needs.
A grease fire in Mrs. Gilbert Fringer’s Brown’s Dam kitchen caused $2000 damage at 6 23 Wednesday evening. Hampton firemen found curtains ignited by a grease pan and spreading to the walls. Fire Chief Richard Bowman estimated $1000 damage to the kitchen and $1000 to its contents. An assist call to New Oxford was cancelled after Hampton units arrived.
A fragmentary local weather note shows yesterday's high and last night's low with sparse time marks. An unrelated ad line promotes insured cool storage for a toy or tool, with a faded business name Princess Cleaners and a masked Hana phone.
The Marching Royal Guard Band from New Oxford High School will represent Adams County at the 46th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester Virginia. The grand parade starts at 1 30 p m Saturday with 107 band members leaving the high school early that morning led by band director Robert Long and 10 chaperones.
Kathy Linebaugh, 16, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ira Linebaugh Fairfield R I was chosen as the 1973 74 Fountaindale Fire Company Queen at the monthly meeting. She received 525 roses crown and banner from outgoing queen Sandy Seiferd. Linebaugh will appear in the Waynesboro Firemen's Parade on May 28 and represent the department at the Adams County Volunteer Firemen's Association Queen contest in East Berlin in August. First runner up Kathy McCleaf and second runners up Sherry Harbaugh and Dorothy Jane Sites each received 5 or more. Richard Cline presided as master of ceremonies. Trooper Gary A Orndorff remained in hospital after a Wednesday incident.

Gettysburg National Park reports April visitor counts and year to date totals far exceed 1972 figures. Park visitation on avenues reached 128,866 in April versus 112,022 a year earlier, and four month total stood at 268,598 vs 211,797. National Cemetery counts show 239,688 in April and 421,446 year to date, up from 221,134 and 382,100. Visitor Center tallies were 134,882 for April and 185,288 year to date, with April 1972 at 64,053 and a yearly total 98,222 by May 1.
Gettysburg chapter president Mrs. Betty Ecker says Mr and Mrs Schober of Culp House E Middle St will host an American Field Service student next fall for the school term. Their daughter Jerri Schober, a Gettysburg High Senior, is expected to participate. Two local girls Laura Turner and Rita Frealing have been named finalists for summer abroad if host families are arranged. Joe Harrison, Gettysburg R 2, who spent last summer in Uganda, is featured in the AFS International Scholarships magazine Our World with his host family in Kawuku Province of Gaba.
Adams York Mental Health Mental Retardation program representatives spoke at a luncheon about enlisting Hanover and Adams County Visiting Nurse Association aid to provide follow up for patients treated under the program. Mary Jane Egerton of Hanover Clinic noted private agencies are overburdened and under funded, stressing cooperation among health services to meet catchment area needs.
The 307-foot National Gettysburg Battlefield Tower, facing legal action before the State Supreme Court, now soars 120 feet over Evergreen Cemetery off Route 140 south of Gettysburg. Protests by cemetery lot owners call the tower an invasion of privacy despite its proximity to graves.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court will hear an appeal from lower courts allowing a 307 ft commercial observation tower near Evergreen Cemetery and Gettysburg battlefield. Gov Shapp sought a preliminary injunction in 1971 to stop the project. The case has bounced through Adams County and Commonwealth Court, with delays due to new evidence and historic preservation concerns. The appeal was notified at 10:30 this morning, no argument date set.
Memorial services were held Tuesday evening for Mary Kay Simmons 19 daughter of Rev and Mrs Simmons of Harrisonburg and Merlin Peterson 21 a Bridgewater College student. Both drowned when a raft capsized in the Dry River near Bridgewater Saturday afternoon. Simmons born in Baltimore moved to Gettysburg at age five and attended public school here before baptism at the Gettysburg Church of the Brethren where her father preached 1958 to 1963.
Phase 2 of a Sky lab countdown rehearsal included a simulated Saturn 1B launch to boost three astronauts toward the orbiting lab. Phase 1 ended with a practice liftoff of the Saturn 5, aiming to place Skylab in orbit on May 14, with the astronauts scheduled to follow the next day.
Mrs. Margaret E. Reese of Fairfield R 1 will observe her 98th birthday on Saturday with an open house at her Virginia Mills home from 2 to 4 PM. She is mother to Mabel Gardiner York Eliza Myers Lake Heritage Alice Swartzbaugh Ethel Herman Pauline Schroll and Margaret D Reese, and has sisters Bessie Seiferd Fairfield and Alice Sanders Hanover.
Conewago Valley School District adopts a 1973-74 budget of 2.523 million with seven tax measures including a 31 mill property tax raise and new income and realty transfer taxes. The board vows to defend the Vo-Tech site against opposition, authorizing legal action and a joint effort with Adams County districts.
The Board of Instate Architectural Review urged Adams County keep the Gettysburg courthouse. It cites the building as architecturally distinguished and vital to preserving the boroughs heritage and community life, urging plan to retain and improve the current structure and government facilities. A Feasibility study request was authorized, with copies to Rogers and Predenels Corpo and the Adams County Commissioners.
A malfunctioning oil furnace carburetor caused a fire at Gettysburg Roof on New Oxford Road, Bonneauville. Firemen from Bonneauville and New Oxford fought flames for over an hour, destroying the south side of the two story home of Mr. and Mrs James L O Connor and driving them to seek shelter with relatives. Fire crews returned at 8 am as smoldering debris reignited in the basement. Battery of details include interior damage to living room and second floor, and loss of personal possessions while the O Connors were at work.
A former inmate, nicknamed Andy, spoke on a Law Day program aired on WGET in Adams County. Judge John A. MacPhail and probationer Bill joined moderator Mrs. Pat Stickley of Tess ler Lutheran Associates. Andy warned that strict guards can be harsh but civil behavior yields respect while noting some guards push others. Bill praised the alcohol information program as worthwhile and suggested broadening it as a preventative. MacPhail noted the DUI sentence can reach three years and a $500 fine, and that suspension of a license is state driven. he also said a one-year suspension is standard to reduce recidivism.
