Speed stop yields 380 pounds of cocaine in Bedford
State police halted a rented truck on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bedford County arresting Hermino Fred Jr. and Ramiro Cruz on narcotics charges with intent to distribute after finding 380 pounds of cocaine valued at about 68 million dollars. Michigan authorities later nabbed Edwin Cervantes and Stanley Williams from Miami on drug charges as the cargo was moved toward Detroit. Cervantes is reportedly wanted in Panama for cocaine possession and linked to a 1985 87 operation transporting five tons into the United States.

Helen D Tunison 66 retired Adams County extension home economist died Thursday at Gettysburg Hospital after a brief illness from bone cancer. Born May 5 1923 in Ansoma Connecticut she earned degrees from University of Connecticut and Cornell and served Penn State Adams County before retiring in 1983. She helped form 4 H clubs homemakers groups and senior citizen groups and aided Planned Parenthood. Survived by husband John R Tunison daughter Luann Battersby and a granddaughter. Memorial service Sunday April 1 at Fairfield Mennonite Church. Memorials to local library 4 H clubs or Penn State Adams County Alumni scholarship. Monahan Funeral Home Fairfield in charge.
