Adams County United Way hits goal sets new record

The 1962 Adams County United Way campaign reached its $150,000 goal, becoming the most successful in the county’s history. Chair Jack Priest announced at the board meeting that the total will likely grow into 1963, and he recognized many donors and groups with Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards for their contributions. Three Mile Island declares unusual two hour emergency

Weikert Sworn In as Gettysburg Mayor

Weikert, 73, was sworn in by Adams County Judge Oscar F. Spicer in the county courthouse. A retired Prudential agent and former two term borough councilman, he succeeds the late Mayor Charles N Lightner who died March. Weikert will serve through 1983 and will not seek election next year. He accepted the post at council urging and has long local government experience. Lightner, 76, finished his third term and was re-elected last November.

Columbia Launch Signals Long Shuttle Test Flight

Columbia begins a seven day mission to test thermal extremes and orbital operations on its third and longest journey. Commander Lousma and pilot Fullerton head a 116 orbit, 4 million mile test, with early medical checks, tourist moments, and prompt mission control updates as the crew adapts to weightlessness and an overheating APU incident. President Reagan praised the mission, while a large public turnout watched the liftoff.
