Breeding horses means big business at Hanover Farm
Hanover Shoe Farms in York Pennsylvania stands as the world’s largest standardbred breeding operation. Superintendent Dr Peter Boyce explains the 4000 acre farm maintains about 350 mares and seven stallions across multiple properties and services 600 to 650 outside mares annually. Stud fees range from 7500 to 75000 dollars depending on stallion quality bloodline and progeny performance. Stallions cover 10 to 175 mares yearly under flexible contracts. All stock is raised on site and sold as yearlings at Harrisburg and Meadowlands auctions. Last year about 250 foals sold averaging 46000 dollars, with some top prices reaching 350000 dollars. Breeding season runs February through early July for reasons tied to breeding cycles.
