Dispute Over Special Deputies Pay Pauses Action

Adams County commissioners and Sheriff Bernard Miller spar over paying special deputies at $5.25 an hour. The salary board tabled Miller’s motion to rescind the Jan. 12 decision and requested a deputy list he says lawfully is on file. Miller argues full-time staff and guards’ overtime labels justify higher pay, while the board and county solicitor pursue a resolution.

Biglerville Borough Faces Gas Infiltration Issue

Biglerville authorities report a gasoline seepage problem in the sewer system. Gasoline was found in the stream near Wolf's Farm Supply and Arco confirmed inspecting its area tanks. Police say contaminated soil around a tank is to be replaced and other nearby tanks may be the source.

Part time officer hired for Biglerville Borough

Biglerville Borough will hire Jim Ridinger of Gettysburg for a 25 hour per week part time police position beginning March 15 on a six month probation. The post fills a vacancy created by the Jan 31 resignation of William Price under an intermunicipal agreement with Arendtsville.

Gettysburg M ayor Charles Lightner dies at 70

Gettysburg Mayor Charles N Lightner of 46 South Street died Tuesday morning at York Memorial Hospital. He was 70 and had just begun his third term after being elected in November. He served 35 years with the state Department of Transportation and 10 years with Penn Crews. He was a United Methodist and held Masonic memberships. Survived by wife Opal, daughter Patty Immons, son Charles H Lightner, two grandchildren and a niece. Funeral Friday at United Methodist Church 2 pm. Burial Evergreen Cemetery. York Springs considers higher water hook up fees

York Springs Borough Council moves to draft a resolution raising water and sewage hook up costs with a minimum charge of 259 for water and 350 for sewage and assigns responsibility for any excess costs to the customer. The panel also asks for bids for a borough engineer and schedules a spring trash cleanup with permits. Charles Overman seeks to present SCAT COM cable proposal at next meeting.

Fairfield School Board delays high school renovations

Fairfield School Board votes to pause renovation plans as it re-evaluates district finances. Superintendent McHenry cites cash-flow problems and state reimbursements delayed until June. Bermudian High to Get New Roof and Dental Program

Bermudian Springs School Board approved a $100,000 replacement roof for Bermudian Springs High School citing 20 year wear and patching limits. The district expected $94,000 in state reimbursement and planned summer installation while beginning a dental hygiene program with a certified hygienist as a part time employee to boost state reimbursement.
