Farmland Losses Prompt Focus on Agricultural Security Areas

Adams County has shed over 16 000 acres of farmland since 1969, with two thirds lost in the last eight years. Farm acreage fell from 196 644 in 1982 to about 175 000 now across at least 95 vanished farms, while statewide farm counts dropped from 106 000 in 1960 to 55 000 in 1988. Act 149 creates Agricultural Security Areas of 500 acres or more, protecting farming operations. ASAs cover several townships and Arendtsville, with about 28 900 acres in 210 farms under protection, alongside 187 035 acres in 1 104 farms countywide. The act aims to preserve agriculture by shielding normal farming from nuisance claims and encouraging continuity and viability of farming practices.
