Carnival crowds and a weak economy dampen attendance on the first two days, as chairmen note slower turnout. Also, public health warnings about sun exposure persist amidst news items on crops, local officials, sports, and a furniture sale ad.

Masonic convention stalls food sales in Gettysburg

Civic groups counting on concessions to fund projects saw meals unsold as crowds failed to materialize for the Masonic convention. Merchants estimate losses of several hundred dollars while Jaycees expect $600 to $700 shortfall. Organizers had anticipated 20,000 visitors but about 8,000 attended.

State law gives police authority to arrest anywhere in state

A new state law, Act 141, signed by Gov. Thornburgh, expands municipal police powers to arrest across state lines and enter neighboring towns in hot pursuits. The measure, taking effect mid August, requires officer identification and cooperation from local chiefs, while preserving existing agreements and possible overreach concerns.

Abbottstown completes main transfer step for water system

Abbottstown engineers connected customers to the upgraded main line switching from four inches to 12 inches. The final connection increases water pressure though work remains on a transformer and a spring line. Reservoir work continues as crews move water to reservoir two and then back to reservoir one for full system delivery.

Possum Valley sewer plant receives priority funding

The Bendersville Borough Council heard that the Possum Valley Sewer Authority project ranks fourth for government funds and should receive sufficient money. Bond counsel Saul Ewing Remick and Saul was hired. design begins mid August with construction next summer and a completion in late 1984 or early 1985. The council also approved buying two fire hydrants from L and B Water Service Inc. for about 1700 dollars to replace obsolete units at South Main and Liberty Lane Park Street.

History Meets The Arts At Gettysburg Scouts

Eighty Girl Scouts from across the nation gather in Gettysburg for a ten day Wider Opportunity program blending Civil War study with arts. Activities include visits to Washington DC, Antietam, Harpers Ferry, and Arlington, with wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Volunteers coordinate workshops travel plans and host families for Adams County hosts, led by Jean Parish and Elizabeth Brown.
