A Czech saboteur group employed six fountain pens loaded with explosives to derail a Nazi freight train headed for the Russian front. The operation caused a railway wreck near Lvov, injuring many soldiers and signaling a bold act against occupiers. The incident is reported with dramatic narrative and credits to the Czecho-Slovak patriot movement.
New Zealand troops arriving from Syria and Palestine with tanks repelled an assault by the Fifteenth German armored division near Fitka, 45 miles southeast of Matruh. Germans retreated under heavy cruiser fire as British defenses solidified. Axis unlikely to swing far south. Evacuation of Matruh completed. British feigned strength to delay and fortify positions.
In Detroit the two afternoon papers elevated display ads to promote war bonds and stamps. Merchants set aside self interest to push the campaign with the message to buy as never before. The Detroit News said messages must yield to the stronger call of bond sales. OFFICERS TOUR FIELD Army guests from Maryland toured Gettysburg National Military Park. Dr. Frederick Tilberg lectured on the park relief map and led the group over the battlefield.
Moscow reports a bloody Sevastopol climax with heavy Soviet losses for Germans. Soviet officials claim repeated German failures and 1,300 German casualties in failed breach attempts while noting Red Army gains near Kursk and continued combat around Sevastopol. British aid pact reportedly signed for delivery of war materiel to the Soviet Union dating to 1941.
A society note from Gettysburg Rts II reports the engagement of Miss Mary Weikert of Harrisburg to John Beard, with a August 29, 1942, wedding planned at the Dome. The event is announced amid roses and daisies with pink and blue ribbons. Guests include Weikert and Beard families from Gettysburg Harrisburg and vicinity.
Mrs and Mrs Robert Hemmington of New Oxford announce the engagement of their daughter Nancy Ruth Hemminger to La Charles W. Bothwell Jr son of Airs and Airs Caries W. Bothwell of Phoenixville Miss Hemminger is a graduate of New Cumberland High School and Gertyshire College where she belonged to Delta Gamma She taught English at York Springs High School last year Lieutenant Bothwell attended Valley Forge Military Academy and Lehigh University was a member of Scabbard and Blade and Delta Tau Delta He is a Gettysburg College graduate and is stationed at Camp Decatur Maryland
Roland Hess son of Mr and Mrs Floyd Bess of Carlisle Street passed the examination at Harrisburg for entrance into the Army Air Corps. He is a Gettsyburg Rich High School graduate and employed as a foreman at the Mechanicsboro Naval Depot. Induction was waived by the State Selective Service director. The Gettysburg board will send 77 registrants to Harrisburg for induction, with 73 scheduled from Draft District No 1 at Keow Osford on Wednesday.
Rotarians learned details of the Rotary International convention held in Toronto Canada delegates Paul Kinsey and Charles L Sie noitz presented reports Mrs Hicheliz accompanied the delegates to Tavon ia The convention theme Learning to live Together President E F Strausbaugh presided Monday evening with 30 members present.
Maud D Shrorer Shamoxin Past Department President of the United Spanish War Veterans Auxiliary sends a note thanking Burgess Fred Pieffer and Gettysburg for hosting the 26th annual convention. She expresses appreciation for the city’s kindness and hopes to return for a future gathering.
American Army bombers struck Wake Island in what is described as possibly the longest over water bombing raid. They hit all targets, set the main building afire, and returned safely with no losses. Col Am W Meehan, a bomber pilot, said the raid probably was the longest over water bombing flight achieved.
Dr Anson B M Hamm of Cornwells Heights Pa has been elected supervising principal of Fairfield schools. He will replace Eltimore H L Slaybaugh who resigned to join DuPont. Hamm, 36, is married and Presbyterian, with a Master of Science from Pennsylvania State College 1933 and EdD from PSU in 1940. He has taught math and science and served in school administration including athletic program duties.
EW Shutz of Berwick township waived a preliminary hearing before Justice John H Base hore on a charge of removing furnishings valued at 3000 from the Cross Keys hotel to satisfy a judgment. He was returned to Adams county jail in default of $2000 bail for August court. Prosecutor is H C Bittinger of Berwick township.
A series of twelve weekly campfire programs sponsored by Gettysburg National Military Park opens Sunday evening July 5 at the foot of East Cemetery Hill on Wahns Wright Avenue. The first speaker Randall Truett, custodian of historical buildings in Washington DC, will present an illustrated lecture on historic landmarks. The 1942 series will emphasize motion pictures from Bryce and Zion, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Colonial National Historical Park including Jamestown Island, and topics like Wartime Gettysburg in Photography and Historic Shrines of the Southeast. The Gettysburg Chamber of Commerce cooperates with the park office in publicizing the series.
The Gettysburg post office offers federal use tax stamps for motor vehicles at $5 each. Stamps have been on sale since June 12 with modest sales for the week, totaling 375 by Saturday. Beginning Wednesday all cars must display a stamp, and sales will continue through July across county post offices. Previously in January, a half-year stamp sold for 3,500.
Donald P. McPherson Jr. chair of the Adams County rationing board praised the public for patriotic support of the gasoline rationing program as about 603 applications are expected for supplemental gasoline after the July registration. He lauded tire dealers for filtering ineligible applicants and warned of continued rubber shortages while noting forms remain scarce and cannot be locally reproduced.
Friends in Gettysburg learn of the April 9 death of D Elmer Tunner Esq in Winona Minnesota at age 82 from a heart attack. He was active in the Tawney and Libera law firm in Winona until five days before his death. He attended Mr Vernon School in Adams County taught by William C Stokies. He moved to Nebraska with his parents in 1877. A brother James A Tawney was a former Minnesota congressman who delivered the Memorial Car address here. He visited Gettysburg in 1989 with his daughter Mrs Helen Bolsum and two grandsons. He is survived by his wife and sister Mrs Jo A Lefferts New York City.
The second will in the estate of Joseph N. Whalen of Littlestown was entered for probate after discovery of a second document. The court revoked letters testamentary granted under the first will and admitted the second will to probate in an amicable suit. Josephine Whalen, sister-in-law of the deceased, is the beneficiary.
In Cairo June 30 AP reports the British Eighth Army gains breathing room with fresh New Zealand troops and US air support. RAF air superiority boosts morale while Axis counterattacks west of Maren and Tobruk are repelled in renewed battles. Heavy US and RAF bombings target Axis ships and supply lines near Tobruk and Mamun ach Tobruk harbor.
Earl R Deardorff aviation cadet and son of Mr and Mrs Melvin Deardorff of near Biglerville is in critical condition at Jacksonville Naval Hospital after a Monday biplane crash. Telegrams to the family report head and internal injuries and fractures as doctors fight to save him. Red Cross in Jacksonville confirms serious injury and offers family assistance.
Sergeant Robert L. Scott, son of Mr and Mrs W L Scott of Gettysburg, leaves tonight for Francis E. Warren Wyoming to enter a Quartermaster Corps Officers Candidate School. A Geewre high school graduate he has aviation training and enlisted in January 1939. He served at Indiantown Gap Camp Livingston La Camp Claiborne La and Fort Dix N J before muster into federal service February 17 1941.
