Adams County Commissioner Robert W Klunk outlined nearly ready plans to reduce inmate tension at Adams County Prison in Gettysburg amid overcrowding that contributed to a Friday escape attempt injuring a guard. A task force will study prison conditions, potential overcrowding remedies, and effects of new mandatory sentencing laws while exploring expanded recreation space security upgrades and video camera use.
After years of hearings and environmental reviews the Gettysburg area sewer project advances. Cumberland Township completes a preliminary final design draft and aims for DER approval within a week while Lake Heritage signs an intermunicipal agreement to seek grants. Gettysburg anticipates construction next spring with the design nearing completion and DER approval required before grant applications.
Liberty Township supervisor Billy Brent said Genstar Stone Products expects enough stone within two weeks to complete urgent road repairs. Genstar Northwest production chief Price Hart stressed the company will meet commitments despite recent quarry slowdowns, while Franklin Township supervisor Larry Dillion noted stockpiled material and flexible hauling arrangements from Gettysburg if needed. Darryl Smith described 1B and 2A as the stones most used for patching and base work, with 1B washed and slightly pricier.
Descendants of General Alexander Hays join National Park Service and Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission officials to dedicate the Gettysburg National Military Park monument in Ziegler's Grove. The event at 1:30 p.m. will feature Hays family members and NPS, PHMC leaders.
The Adams County Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse hired David R. Vazquez to act as interpreter counselor and liaison for the counties Hispanic community. The one year funded program will survey social service agencies to assess needs and may open a northern Adams County office to serve transient and year round Hispanics. Vazquez an ex addict will work as a prevention specialist and educate Hispanics about drugs and alcohol while offering bilingual referral services to agencies law enforcement and employers.
A small woman with a handgun robbed the Arendtsville High store shortly after 10 p.m. The unidentified suspect demanded money, fled in a brown two door Chevrolet with a second male accomplice described as brown haired and glasses. A clerk reported the robber appeared about 20 years old, five feet tall, 80 to 90 pounds, wearing a black and red hunting vest and a tack hat with black makeup smeared on her face. Police searched the area for the car and suspects, which were seen heading north out of Arendtsville.
