New Jersey Supreme Court backs state takeover of Trenton schools

The New Jersey Supreme Court 6-0 upheld appointing a monitor general to oversee Trenton's troubled school district citing mismanagement and incompetence and rejected a challenge to state control. The ruling allows continued state oversight of the city schools.

Lancaster paramedics buried after boy rescue attempt

Paramedics Bruce Ditlo and Kevin Weatherlow suffocated trying to rescue a young boy from a septic tank and were buried within sight of each other. About 500 mourners attended for Ditlow 24 and Weatherlow 22, who died from carbon dioxide buildup. Jeffery Jones 18, a volunteer firefighter, had funeral services earlier.

Maryland Prosecutor Expands Emmitsburg Check Probe

Maryland State Prosecutor subpoenas additional canceled checks from Emmitsburg records dating back to 1974 as town officials insist books show no wrongdoing. Campgrounds Seek Court Ruling On Highland Tax

Three campgrounds including Timberline Recreational Enterprises and Gettysburg KOA challenged Highland Township and Gettysburg Area School District in Adams County Court seeking a declaratory judgment that the 1978 admissions tax ordinances are void and not enforceable they cite Local Tax Enabling Act exemptions. The suit notes the taxes were not collected since 1979 and seeks clarity on applicability to admissions including storage and electrical charges. The township plans to share tax proceeds with the school district and may pursue back taxes pending court decision.

Planners OK Mobile Home Standards For County Subdivision Plan

Adams County Planning Commission approves an eight page mobile home park regulation set to amend the county subdivision ordinance. The rules apply to new parks and expansions and require permits drainage plans vegetation and a 5000 square foot lot with 45 foot width plus a 10 percent recreation area and DEA approved water and sewer systems where municipal services are unavailable.
